Hello VJrs,

When we applied for our marriage license, I used my First Name, Middle Name (mother's maiden name) and Last Name. After we got married, I dropped my maiden name (Last Name of father) and used my husband's Last Name. Since I have one-name name (i.e. Maria instead of Maria Cristina), I am using my mother's maiden name as my middle name.

Here's how I did it:

Maria Gonzales Reyes - single name (same name in my passport and visa and other documents)

Maria Gonzales Smith - married name (name on my SS card, state ID, greencard and all my documents here in the US)

You see, I kept my mother's maiden name as my middle name. In our Philippine Family code, you're supposed to drop your mother's maiden name (as the middle name) and use your own maiden name as the middle name when you use your husband's last name. Here in the US, I guess it's no big deal as long as everything will be documented and consistent. All names should match to one another especially your name at the DMV, SSA and DHS's records.

Some Pinays did it this way especially those who got two-name names.

Here's an example:

Maria Cristina Gonzales Reyes - single name

Maria Cristina Smith - married name

I hope I didn't confuse you... Good luck!
