So how does the age of the father come into play with Down Syndrome and other birth defects?

I'm not the expert but I read that the older the father is, the more likely for genetic mutation on his part, and that causes a lot of weird stuff. Like a genetic disorder my dad has... it never appeared in our family before, and my grandpa was about 48 when my dad was born.

WOW, 48!! Holy cow, I'm sure that's the reason!!!

We know your bias against "older" people. I'm sure you can take some small statistical fact and turn it into a major social issue.

I have no bias against older people. I'm just pointing out that they're starting to find that older fathers affect the baby's genetic health as well, although I'm guessing they'll never find it affects the baby as much as having an older mother. Overreact much?

Please, for the love of god, try to refrain from using that smiley. It's violent. Thanks.

I agree, I didn't see any bias in Alex's post, just a statement of fact. :)

Maybe not in this post, but Alex did say more than a few times in the past that 30+ or 40+ year-olds

who marry women in their 20's (especially foreign women) are "creepy."

Exactly.

Sometimes people can't admit their own bias and prejudice.

I don't mind admitting mine - some people won't like me anyway and I don't care! :bonk:

What does that have to do with this thread? Regardless of whether that distorted version of something I said a year ago is relevant (it's not), you're obviously trying to cause trouble. Go amuse yourself with something more productive.

I have no problem with people who are older, as I've said countless times. I do have a problem with old people who do things that bother me. Impregnating someone who loves them is not one of those things that bothers me.

Alright, so what would the answer be?

Since Mags said the age of the eggs is a factor in Down Sydrome, does the age of the Dad matter at all?

I'm one of those creepy foreign women, by the way, married to a guy 16 years older then me.

Well, considering that this post is in THIS thread, that is the one I was referring to. :P

I think I mentioned it in a previous post that if a woman is over 35 then there have been some initial studies done where an older father can be a contributing factor in a Down Syndrome fetus being conceived. In a woman over 35 with a man who is in his early to mid twenties there was no contributing factor noted nor any increases in Down Syndrome conceptions.

The studies are in their infancy however, but it seems that although the aged eggs are a primary factor, add to that a man over 40 and you have some increased risks IF the woman is over 35 as well.

For Down's Syndrome, the age of the mother is the overwhelming factor. Just look at the stats.

There are other defects that are related to the age of the father, but it's clear that Down's Syndrome is by far the biggest problem here.

Wow, 16 years, now that's creepy! (I'm 56 and my wife is 31)
