So how does the age of the father come into play with Down Syndrome and other birth defects?

I'm not the expert but I read that the older the father is, the more likely for genetic mutation on his part, and that causes a lot of weird stuff. Like a genetic disorder my dad has... it never appeared in our family before, and my grandpa was about 48 when my dad was born.

WOW, 48!! Holy cow, I'm sure that's the reason!!!

We know your bias against "older" people. I'm sure you can take some small statistical fact and turn it into a major social issue. :bonk:

Older fathers raise risk of genetic disorders not just women.

True, but the increased risk from older fathers is much smaller and the evidence less clear than for older mothers. The increased risk of Down's Syndrome with the age of the mother is well-established.

BTW, I believe I learned way back that a baby girl is born with all of the eggs she will ever have. True?

Yes - but men's fertility also declines after 40 (both sperm production and testosterone). Some studies have suggested that the risk of sporadic single-gene mutations may be four to five times higher for fathers who are 45 and older, compared with fathers in their 20s.

Older fathers have increased risk for a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, and also neurofibromatosis, the connective tissues disorder Marfan syndrome, skull and facial abnormalities like Apert syndrome. Also - children of men who became a father at 40 or older were 5.75 times as likely to have an autism disorder as those whose fathers were younger than 30.

hey mags do you know how often to people actually choose to abort if there is an abnormality?

More importantly, why would anyone choose not to?

Agreed!

I had the fold testing thingy at London UCLH, they said it looked fine. Then had the blood tests and they told me my chances were high so I had an amnio and got the all clear :)

I have no bias against older people. I'm just pointing out that they're starting to find that older fathers affect the baby's genetic health as well, although I'm guessing they'll never find it affects the baby as much as having an older mother. Overreact much?

Please, for the love of god, try to refrain from using that smiley. It's violent. Thanks.
