Another tasteless blast from McCain's past... called Chelsea Clinton 'ugly' in 1998

Calling a woman 'ugly' is what men(and other women) do to a woman when they want to feel bigger and better than her and can't think of anything else to criticize her about. It's like comedians resorting to fart jokes when they run out of material. 'Fat' is a variation on the same tired theme.

Unfortunately we largely do have a heirarchy based on looks, at least for women. When you are called 'ugly' your whole life and passed over by men your self-esteem crumbles and you feel like you should not even try for anything. You end up working in low-paying back-office type jobs because you feel you are not good enough to be out front and visible. I speak from personal experience. Someone like Janet Reno could have a lot of power but why does it matter when in the end she is the butt of jokes like this. A man can be almost dead(like McCain) bald, overweight(to a point) and his looks will not even be mentioned, but let a woman not get enough sleep one night and she will be called 'haggard'. It's a nasty double standard designed to keep women out of public office I think.

Agreed completely Pattu, unfortunately :( But there is NO way out of it. I went and did a google search on Chelsea to see if she was indeed 'fugly' when I first saw the post and there's apparently been a lot of scrutiny as to whether or not she's had plastic surgery in the last couple years.

Does seem like usually the case that if you're really ugly, you're ridiculed; if you're too into looks and aesthetics (clothes, hair, make up, etc.), you're ridiculed; if you succumb to being called hideous all your life and do something like go get plastic surgery, suddenly you're weak and lack self respect, so you're ridiculed; and if you react the other way and (quite justifiedly) get aggressive towards all these jerks and try to call them out on being such jerks (aka 'feminism'), you're really really really ridiculed.

There IS no way out of it other than to be born gorgeous - but even being born gorgeous in certain situations you'll be valued only as a trophy and not as an intellectual equal; so really you have to be born gorgeous and also 'strong' looking (only not to the point where you scare the man?) and then go bisexual and have hot lesbian sex (but not 'dike' sex) but ALSO sex with men because yay the almighty and unresistable #######.

Sorry all men out there, I hate simplifying this stuff down and boxing males in as like these horrible people or anything; but good god it gets really annoying sometimes :(

My mom very recently came out that she's a lesbian. I'm engaged to my boyfriend, and she asked if I wasn't sure I was a lesbian too because I have "lesbian" qualities, which apparently to her equates to not acting like a barbie doll and being independent :D

I'm starting to feel like if I dig just a bit under the surface with McCain there's gonna be a lot I don't like :( Been hearing that he was really wild in his youth, to the point of DUI's and even endangering fellow soldiers in Vietnam...I don't know...have to start looking into all this. But probably the same goes for Hillary. Sigh :(

I don't think this is really a discussion about how our culture places too much emphasis on a woman's looks.

It's about a guy who wants to run our country, and the kind of flip off-hand comments he makes. It doesn't stop with Chelsea Clinton. You don't have to do much googling to come up across numerous 'McCain-isms'.

They guy is clearly a dolt.

Problem is I think a lot of Republicans that would vote for him wouldn't CARE about these sort of one-liner jokes, or that other thing Troll posted about his racial slurs. I'm not saying Republicans are bad people, just that mostly they're still really traditional and just...let things like this go, even if they don't agree with what's said. Like my dad makes comments about women being fat and he hates fat girls and all this ####### all the time (which is amazing because he sure did raise 3 little fat girls, and never made an effort to shove apples down our throats instead of little debbie cakes); and I live in SC and you'll hear some older person say some huge generalization (stereotyping, not quite mean-hearted racism but still) about 'colored' people or something, and people do just let these things go. I don't know if it's respect for your elders or what, but at least here in my Republican state I don't think many people would really care that McCain says this sort of stuff.

To tell the truth I don't really care that he says this stuff THAT much, I mean it's not a huge priority. It's just that it indicates that maybe he's not kept up with the times and isn't savvy to the way things are today, that maybe he's far too stubborn in his old age to change as society changes, and also is kind of too...stupid to say these sorts of comments in his living room, okay, and not where reporters or leakers are around.

America already has a President who seems "uncomfortable" with words. What should you all do? I know, elect in a President who makes inane, condescending and poor taste comments instead! Bingo!

I've always thought of this as quite tasteless and condescending as well.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Yeah right.

You know what would happen to me whenever I met someone in the UK (I mean, after I would open my mouth and they could tell I wasn't local). They'd want to know where in the US I was from. When I would tell them WV - well most of them would burst into a few bars of "Country Roads". After the joke (ha - ha - bleh) was over, I'd get a blast about our President. The word most often used was "warmonger".

I bet they'd just love John McCain and his '100 years in Iraq'.

Hmmm. Maybe.

Was George Bush in the room? You think maybe she was talking to him? I mean....she might have needed to explain herself...........

It may not be politically correct but the man has a valid point.
HUH??? What "valid point" do you pull out of this?
Duh, the simple point that Chelsea is fugly.
Since when do irrelevancies qualify as valid points?

Tasteless, IMO. Why does everyone keep defending McCain's lack of tact? I guess that's not an important quality in a president?

The guy speaks his mind in an honest fashion. That counts for something.

If he didn't do it at other peoples expense - then yes, it would count FOR something. Otherwise it just shows poor upbringing.
