I am 29 and I don't have a driver's license. When people find out, their reaction usually is like this:

omg.gif

But there was no need to do it, I always lived in big cities with public transportation and taxis. I can't possibly be the only person without a driver's license, I thought. So therefore I created the poll!

Come on peeps, come out of your "I can't drive" closets!

(I kind of think this might backfire on me and I am really the only one without one. LOL)

I have a driver's license. In Brazil you an get a DL when You're 18 (when I got mine) and here it took me 2 months to be available to have one. I can't imagine my life without having one.

I started to drive I guess around 14 years old.

I'm the USC and got my DL when I was 16. I can't imagine not knowing how to drive either.

My husband knew how to drive before he moved to the U.S. but didn't have a DL - too expensive for him and he didn't have a car anyway. He got his license as soon as he could - it was quite easy - and now I know he can't imagine NOT having one ;) .

I think I would have gotten my license, if it were not such a hassle to get one.

You need to prepare yourself for the driving test with 24 hours of theorethical classes in a private driving school, plus a minimum of 12 hours of driving practice - and you are only allowed to do that with a certified driving teacher. So you can't practice driving around with your parents or friends, it has to be done with a private driving school. And because of all that it costs roughly €1.500 to get your license. And it takes months until you can to your test. It's really quite ridicilous.

I have a driver's license. Been driving since I was 15, but had a driver's permit then.

In most cases, I'd imagine driving is a bigger deal in North American cities since we're spread out more. That makes public transportation (when it's available) not easily accessible. In the U.S., for instance, the mindset is that "everyone" has a car and the landscape is designed with that in mind. If you lack a vehicle, you'll be confined to your local area and unless you live downtown or your city has an unusually good bus/train/subway system (and most American cities don't), you're effectively screwed.

This doesn't mean many American cities aren't attempting to get better public transportation systems; they are, but Americans, in general, are very attached to their cars. It doesn't really take a genius to figure out why, either. Given the choice, who wouldn't rather use their own vehicle than take a bus, train or subway? Most of us only even use airlines because the distances are too great to drive efficiently.

I have DL. But my sister does not have one. In high school, I drove her around a lot or took public transport. In college, she lived 10 mins away (walking) from campus. When she did her postgraduate, she lived on-campus apartment and she rode bicycle. Now she lives in Singapore where public transport is great. She is 33 yo ;)
