I'm curious. When we borrow money, who do we borrow it from? Does the Federal Reserve just print more bills with nothing to back them and give them to us?

They print paper with the backing of the us treasury and sell the paper to investors. The investors give us actual money for it. In return, we pay them interest.

The whole arrangement rests on the assumption (a good and sound one, actually) that everyone who has our paper won't try to redeem at the same time. As long as no one does that, we're good.

and providing debt holders liquidity, meaning they could get rid of it quickly. This relief of not

having to be stuck with government debt creates a liquid market that enables the government

to borrow capital over long periods of time.
