Oh and all of their children's names start with a "J"

This is the scariest part

they kinda creep me out too. they all seem so excited when they're talking about doing stuff together. also, I would go crazy without alone time. how many people in one bedroom? no thanks!

eta: I saw on the show the other night that the mom actually said they have a buddy system and the older kids take care of the younger ones like help them pick out clothes for school and get dressed and stuff because she can't do it all herself

In almost any large family (4+) the older children will take care of the younger to some extent. I'm curious as to how many of the girls will go on to have their own large families - perhaps they'd like a break from the child-rearing themselves? As the eldest of six (with a 14 1/2 year age gap between myself and the youngest) I did my fair share of babysitting and changing nappies and cooking meals, and I think if I'd have gone straight from that to having my own family I might have easily grown tired of it all!

In an over-populated world I think it's wrong to keep having so many babies. I also think it's incredibly sad that they think taking the pill caused a miscarriage and prayed for forgiveness. Pregnancy can be incredibly dangerous even now, and I think a mother should put the needs of her existing children first.

This family freaks me out. Some friends and I were sitting around one night watching this show and someone said the kids remind them from the kids in Children of the Corn! I think it's strange how they do things. She has said she will more less have the baby to herself for a year, then the child gets passed off to a "buddy." Then that child basically raises them. Now I know back in the day this was done all the time, but now? Also, do they honestly think they can send all these kids to college? And now they have their own t.v show which you know is making them money to support their kids. Ok....that's how they'll go to college. I guess I think it's weird when these people have all these kids, then they get a show on t.v.

I don't know why, but... I suddenly had an image of Michelle Duggar being pregnant and then "given birth" to one of those xenomorphs from the Aliens movies. I have nothing against the Duggar family (sure, they're a little odd, but so am I), so I can't really explain this strange -- and somewhat disturbing -- imagery.

The curious thing is 80 years ago this wouldn't have even made the headlines.. Families USED to get this big and USED to have these roles etc...

For the record the entire family built this house.. no sitting around for those young men, they built their family home - how would you like to have THOSE skills at 14-17 years old?

I'm not saying this is a great way to do things in 2008 but I think you have to be fair here..

This family isn't hurting anyone.. and what they are doing was at one time quite "normal".. just cause I wouldn't live like that.. doesn't mean there isn't positives to this situation..

Different .. yes.. not so creepy to me..

But I'm pretty sure families didn't used to name all of their children after just one letter of the alphabet, dress all their children in identical clothes and give them identical haircuts, and I'm also pretty sure that the children weren't all assigned their hobbies and interests.

They have to realize that their family is perceived as a circus exhibit by most of mainstream American culture. I wonder why they would expose their kids so willingly to that.

At any rate, one kills me most days, so I can't imagine that many children.

How much money do you have to earn to support that little lot...

You mean those little bastards can't support themselves?

Absolutely. I couldn't, in any way, cope with that many children. The top of my head would blow off.

However, if they want to have 17+ kids that's up to them, it isn't as if they are claiming SS benefits - they pay for it all themselves. Be it through publicity or their jobs, it's irrelevant. Speaking as a member here (and not a mod) I think it's a little nasty to keep on about the state of her #######. She's had 17 kids, so bloody what, her husband obviously likes it down there and that's all that matters, surely? And let's not forget it takes two to tango, yet it is Mrs Duggar who is getting all the rude comments made about her. ;)
