Ok, I went to get the 'valid only with DHS authorization' notation removed, and a new SSN issued for me, and to apply for a first time SSN for my K-2 daughter.

I brought our GC's with me.

They took the new application for a replacement SSN for me, and a first time SSN for my daughter.

After entering it in the computer, and leaving the little booth to photocopy our GC's, she came back and told me that she cant remove the notation as our GC's expire in 2 years and that my status is conditional, and that my GC shows my DHS authorization for the next 2 years. She said that if I needed a SSN for my child for tax reasons, then to apply for a ITIN, and wrote the IRS number on a post it pad, along with the IRS website so I can download the forms.

huh?

I thought that once I am a perm resident, I could get my daughter a SSN and have the notation removed from mine.

Guess I'll have to wait until conditions are removed.

I didnt argue with her because she caught me off guard and I felt dumbfounded by what she was telling me.

Which SSA office did the boneheads tell you this?

Documents that establish lawfully admitted for permanent residence (LAPR)

-- I-551 card

NOTE: Some LAPR aliens have conditional 2-year I-551s (Alien Registration Receipt Card), subject to the limitation that they must apply for removal of the conditional basis 90 days before the second anniversary of the admittance date to the United States. A conditional I-551 is identified by an expiration date 2 years later than the admittance/adjudication date is acceptable proof of permanent residency.

-- Temporary I-551

Temporary evidence of immigrant status is issued for an alien to use

until the permanent I-551 card is received. This may be a stamp in the individual's passport or on the I-94.

Tamz,

You are in the same boat as we are. Your office does not deal with immigrant issues on a daily basis. They probably got some training about 20 years ago and they are completely out of touch. They mostly spend their time fighting with young people that don't want to work and want to scream their way into a disability.

Remember you are in the south. It's not the same as the rest of the world. Also remember that you are a lot smarter than these people.

DON'T ASK FOR THE SUPERVISOR. Your friends here are very intelligent about laws and regulations but if you insult these southern people you will be taken out by security. I am sure you know that by now.

Print MDYoung's post and ask them to read it. Say something nice about what they are wearing. Call them " mam " or " sir ".

Trust me, they made a mistake but they will never admit it. Make them think they are " helping " you by getting around these burdensome regulations. If you treat them with great respect you will leave with your problems solved. If you try to fight them then you will end up in the emergency room getting stitches. I am sure that, by now you realize you are not in the same world as the rest of VisaJourney.

Trust me Sis! I am telling you how to get the card. I am sure your husband will tell you the same.

Things I've learned from frustrating times at the SSA office:

(1) Be organized! Have all your paperwork in hand. They are very relieved when that's the case.

(2) Bring along any official print outs (WITH URL!) that address your situation. MDYoung's very useful post is a great one to have too.

(3) Go back in and gently explain your situation again. If you get trouble or resistance, show them the print out from their own site. :) Include any instruction pages, as necessary.

(4) If you have more than one office in town, try the other office if the first has been problematic. This may or may not work.

26 January 2005 - Entered US as visitor from Canada.
16 May 2005 - Assembled health package, W2s.
27 June 2005 - Sent package off to Chicago lockbox.

19 July 2005 - NOA 1: I-130 received!
24 August 2005 - Biometrics appointment (Naperville, IL).
25 August 2005 - AOS touched.
29 August 2005 - AP, EAD, I-485 touched.

Tamz,

The day of our interview, we stopped by SSA Office soon as we got back into town before we even went home. We got everything taken care of that very same day and all we had was his stamp in his passport & is old SSC. We didn't have any problem at all. In fact, he has already received his new SSC. Maybe you should try this office in my town next time you come to your favorite stores...LOL

sjoefl01: I hope you were joking about what you said about the South.

If you print out what I posted you might want to leave off

"Which SSA office did the boneheads tell you this?"

However, I don't think you need to print anything I'm pretty sure they now have a copy of that procedure.

Greetings!

I think you were wise not to argue with that one. It hardly pays, but what sometimes may pay is to get all your questions out and really pin them down on what they are saying. (We often keep a pocket recorder to immortalize such moments :) Then you can always ask to speak to someone up the line from them, such as a caseworker. Or really anyone else who might be more help to you. My wife thinks they are wrong about it.

She tells me she believes you should be able to get a SSN now, without conditions; If you go ahead and try again.

We are pending hers right now. And even tho we had a circumstance putting our case into priority handling, and have an excellent dialog with them{Immigration}, we will still need to wait for up to 6 weeks to get the SSN we're told,

while SSA waits for Immimgration to send them back a written confirmation that she did indeed get work authorization. Even tho we offerred to show them her card and attendant paperwork right then and there. It's a bureaucracy! :)

Mr.Ktun

PS// I know that since your AOS is already approved, the cases are different . . .

UPDATE***

I went back to the SSA office, and I was able to apply for a SSN for my daughter. Again, even with the print-out which she just glanced at, she told me that I could not get the notation removed until I remove conditions or am naturalized. I asked her to read the print out and she said she knows the rules to follow regarding immigrants (she said the notation is so employers, banks etc, know to ask for my perm resident card).

At least I was able to get my daughter one. I was advised that my daughters would also come with the notation on it.
