Hi, when I have flown to America in the past I have filled in a customs form of things that I am taking into the country that will remain there e.g. presents for my Fiancee. When I actually move there though I will be taking a laptop and a camera and clothes (should be obvious) etc. My concern is that as a non-resident/citizen my value allowance for customs is going to be exceeded by quite a bit. What happens in this case? Will I still be allowed to take the items in? Will I be charged extra? I am hoping that as I will be travelling to move over there on a K1 Visa the officers will understand the situation. Thank you in advance for your help.

When I came in I filled in the white form and didn't declare anything as it says that you will be returning them to your country of origin. I came through Charlotte and didn't really go thru customs as I was diverted off before I got to it, then just handed the form to a girl at a desk and she didn't even look at it. I don't think they're too worried if you have a visa.

Hope this helps :)

cheeky^wolf was in the same situation that you will soon be in, usuklove (not returning to the 'country of origin'). So, follow the wolf's advice: fill out the white form and don't declare anything. Seems easy enough to me!

You could put on the form "used personal goods: value = $0"- that is what my husband and I did on our way back last week.

Basically, you're pretty much exempt from duty if what you're bringing into the country is your own personal and household goods (and has been for awhile) and is not for commercial use.

I just came in and didn't declare anything. I'm not going to pay any custom fees on my personal belongings because it is ridiculous to do so, esp. since they are used and I've already paid VAT.

The people at customs were really nice and didn't ask any question despite my spanking new immigrant visa which should have let them know that I'm not going to take anything back.
