There is no need for a lawyer when you can fill out the forms yourself. Just take your time and fill them out correctly and gather the information they ask for.

The hardest part of the entire process was the waiting.

I had one. Wasted $2000. A week after my check cleared I found VJ. The way I see it the lawyer cost us a 6 month wait. I sent all our stuff in to the lawyer in febuary and he wasted a bunch of time sending it in. It got to them 1 week after the IMBRA law took effect. If I had done it myself I could have avoided the whole thing. Oh well, live and learn.

I fired him last week and demanded a partial refund. I told him that if we did not get a fear refund I would make a website telling everyone about my immigration lawyer experience and tell them about VISAJOURNEY where thousands of people have successfully completed their own paper work and get it done quicker then an immigration lawyer.

This is a DIY site. Did you expect a different result for the poll?

Very very risky advice in this thread. Except for VJTroll's post.

WE ARE NOT IMMIGRATION EXPERTS! This site does NOT replace experienced counsel. It's right on the damn home page.

hiring a lawyer didn't even cross our mind....after we got married in egypt, we went to the american embassy to start the paperwork--we had absolutely nooooo idea what we were doing...

some guy outside the embassy went in and got us an application and told us to go home, fill it out, and call to make an appointment....so we went home, read it, and found out that we couldn't file directly from egypt....

confused as hell, we got on the internet and went to the site that was on the application...we took a quick look and figured we'd worry about it when i got back to the US....after getting back, i started reading the uscis site and a month later had the I-130 sent out...

while i was waiting for that to be approved, i found out that a friend of mine was working for an immigration lawyer and she told me should could get me a good deal--$500.....she scared the ####### out of me....telling me that it was going to take forever without a lawyer and whatnot....i was worried for a little while and before i knew it, the petition was approved....and i realized, it wasn't as hard as it seemed....

wow, i'm just rambling on... ...do anything to get away from the books!!

anyway, NO, we didn't use a lawyer, there's no reason to...

::There’s a laugh in my eyes::

There’s a waltz in my walk

And it’s been such a long time

Since there was hope in my talk

If you never knew

What it is that’s new.. it’s you

‘Cause when your hands are in mine

You set a fire that everyone can see

And it’s burning away

Every bad memory

To tell you the truth

If it’s something new.. baby it’s you

It’s you in the morning

It’s you in the night

A beautiful angel came down

To light up my life

The world’s a different place

Where nothing’s too hard to say

And nothing’s too hard to do

Never too much to go through

To tell you the truth

Everything that’s new.. baby it’s you

It’s you in the morning

It’s you in the night

A beautiful angel came down

To light up my life

My life, my life

Ohh

So if I get to grow old (oh if I get to grow old)

With many years behind me (many years behind me)

There’s only one thing I want (aahh)

One thing I need beside me

For all that you are

For everything you do

For all that you’ve done

Just for showing me the truth

When myself and my partner were initially discussing applying for a K1, we mistakenly thought that a lawyer might be able to pull strings unavailable to us to speed the process up. A quick scan of the web showed that this wasn't the case and so long as we were thorough in our application there was no need to hire a lawyer.

Then we found Visa Journey and the fabulous community of people on here and any remaining thoughts of hiring a lawyer were forgotten.

I'd rather take advice from people that have gone through the process and solved their own issues than someone with a law book.
