Hey guys,

My Fiance will be arriving shortly *crosses fingers* and I am just trying to be well prepared and informed.

What is needed as documentation to obtain a DL? In his case he will need a Learner's Permit for a month or so before taking the driving test. The DMV is confusing me. Heck when I moved to VA from FL they told me many different things for my own DL. Took me 3 trips for them to be happy. It was mostly a Title/Tags issue though for me.

Thanks much!

I hope this is helpful but this is my experience with getting a VA DL:

After I had received my first NOA from USICS I was able to use that as my proof of legal presence. It says that an I-797C (NOA) is sufficient right on VA DMV forms

For proof of address, the I-797C was also good

I had to hand over my Ontario driver's license and show my passport

I had a DL valid for one year and it took only about 30 minutes. The cost was about $6 from what I remember (less because it's a temp DL)

It might be different if he doesn't have a DL from Ireland... and I know that for some foreign driver's licenses they require that you do a written test before they give you a license. Not sure if that helped at all :)

A bit yes. He is going to have to take the written no matter what as he needs a learning permit first. Thanks :)
