Mags and I met online. Does that make us weird or freaks? We may indeed BE weird or freaks, but it's really no one's damn business.

note: anyone who answers that or agrees may be suspended

lemme see if that's true:

Yes, Platy, you're weird and freak *runs*

Yep, just look at his photo, he really is a freak! (he's the third guy on the left).

I make no judgement call on that (unlike a few people here, from what I've read), but I can definitely understand it. Why is it anyone else's business how someone else finds their partner? If it works for both parties involved, it's no concern of ours.

Again, people aren't really talking about the meeting online, but rather the IMB. And I think what you're assuming is that both parties are completely honest about their intentions (which in yours and Mags' case I'm sure is true). What is concerning is people being taken advantage of due to a desperate situation - on either side.

That's a good point. Unfortunately in some cases people ARE being taken advantage of, sometimes on one side and sometimes on both. Of course that can happen regardless of how you meet, but on web sites who really target middle-aged American guys wanting to marry younger women from poorer countries, you have the perfect ingredients for just such exploitation (again, in either direction, or both). However, what a lot of people overlook is the huge number of wonderful, successful marriages that are also a result of such web sites. Some people have trouble seeing both the good and bad in a situation at the same time. I don't.

Depends on what you were trying to be.

I think I'm just pointing out the obvious. No jealousy on this site.

This is precisely why so many American women(esp. if they are your 'just average' counterparts looks- or money-wise) end up in their late 30s - early 40s unmarried and possibly too old to have kids, after being given the 'I'm not ready to marry but I'd love to hang out with you for the next 2-5 years' speech too many times.

I suspect there are an equal number of men and women sitting alone on a saturday night having similar thoughts about the opposite sex. Perhaps the title of the thread aluding to "soul mate" is part of the problem. Neither side wants to "settle" because they are looking for a prince or a princess or a "soul mate." Because the expectations are so high for each side, many end-up being alone since the allusive "mr. or mrs. perfect" simply doesn't exist.

True - honestly I think the media is largely to blame - too many women thinking they are princesses and only deserve a big money type and too many guys thinking they are Donald Trump looking for a 'trophy wife' who looks like their favorite porn star.

I'd rather have a guy who is poor and makes no pretenses about it but is hard-working and loves me for me rather than some guy who is 'fronting' so he can attract a supermodel lookalike.

Hey, what happened to the OP? Did he miss all the fun here?

I'm really not surprised he didn't stick around, considering many of the replies....

OK, I'm going to give him one good reply ...

Hello, I was engaged to a Russian girl in 2006. It did not work out for many reasons. I , now am searching again. I wanted to see if anyone had some good experiences with certain websites. Im anxious about all the scammers that are out there.

Thanks

Craig

Dear Craig,

The choice of websites you use is less important than the approach you take to finding your soul mate. There are plenty of scammers out there, on most or all websites. You will not avoid scammers by selecting a certain website. More importantly, you will not avoid a repeat of your previous experience by selecting a particular website.

Think of the website as just a way to meet people who want the same kind of relationship you do. When you do connect with someone, take your time to get to know about her. Talk to her friends, family, coworkers. Try not to be "blinded by love" and listen to your gut. If something doesn't seem right, check it out and proceed carefully.

Hopefully you are looking for someone to fall in love with and build a relationship with. Look for someone who likes to talk about that. Think about the questions she asks you. Are they about you, your family, your goals and dreams, or are they about your income or your assets? Does she seem to be in a hurry to find any American who will marry her, or is she being selective and looking for the right guy for her. Are you looking for the prettiest and youngest woman you can find? That's a mistake you'll regret, and if you think that way, you really need to look at yourself first because you have a problem.

I met my wife on a website, but not after talking to a lot of scammers and opportunists. That's just the way it is. It's rather funny, we didn't trust each other at first and were both very careful. I had met a lot of scammers and opportunists, and she had met a lot of cheaters and liars. We both could see that we wanted the same things so we keep going and our relationship just kept getting stronger and stronger. She doesn't speak fluent English, and one day she said, "I feel like I'm stuck on you". Anyway, I knew what she meant and I said, "Yes, I'm stuck on you too". My wife are our child are the most important things in my life. No, that's not right, they ARE my life. We are totally committed to each other, and to our child. I hope you can find that too.

Good Luck,

Gary
