I bet she would hit him with a rubber mallet if she could.

Well, there you have it! I guess I'll go home and tell my wife our marriage is DOOMED because we didn't meet in the approved fashion!

Hi, defensive, party of one

When exactly did I say your marriage was doomed? And why does my opin that IMBs and specifically targeting a foreign country cos one has more buying power is creepy have any bearing on your marriage?

People need to stop looking for validation from outside sources.

Your implications are all over your posts, so save the BS. You really give yourself too much credit. I don't need your validation or anyone else's, that's why I make a joke of your opinion. Sheesh.

It's not an implication at all...I said exactly what I mean. I'm about at subtle as a mack truck ;)

What exactly IS the benefit to intentionally targeting a foreign born SO? The lonely wait? The 'living in two time zones'? The $$$ it costs for visits and phones and filing fees? The paperwork? The adjustment? The years of gov't hassle?

I don't see the point of intentionally seeking that out.

I find it creepy. Deal with it.

This thread gone far asking a simple question a website all the way up to on line dating bashing. Dose it really matter how a couple meet? Its how you commit yourself to marriage.

Have to say, I 100% agree! All the guy wanted was a simple recommendation from people, having international relationships, he considered could help. I don't think he asked for his methods to be scrutinized. We all find love in our own unique way and what? Let it be.

I don't see the point of intentionally seeking that out.

The downsides that you list - real as they are - are short-term.

For someone who loves to travel, there can be benefits to having a foreign-born SO, despite the cost involved. My wife and I are looking forward to showing my step-daughter around the UK, and using my parents place as a base to tour Europe. With (hopefully) another child at some point, the trips back will add more meaning, especially to him/her. Sure, you can travel without having a foreign SO, but there's nothing like being shown around by a local.

My step-daughter (7) loves the connection she has to the UK. She proudly shows off the small gifts "from England" to her friends, that my Mum sends her. She does a mean 'mockney' accent. She celebrates Guy Fawkes. For me, these things are beneficial to our life together as a family.

I'm not saying there's no benefit to being in an int'l relationship....I'm saying why use IMBs and the like to date internationally with people who are explicitly looking for American partners is done so because there's at least a partial immigration benefit which makes the petitioner a bit more desirable than usual.

I guess you don't see the point, unless there's some evil, nasty, dishonest, or unethical reason for being willing to deal with all that, right? Why don't you just come right out and tell us what you are thinking those reasons might be?

Please make sure to hit on some stereotypes and prejudices while you're at it.

Western women are pretty much the lowest of the low; the least desirable. We can't go on dating websites in the same fashion that men can and look for a foreign husband. It is more socially acceptable for an average man to seek out a beautiful foreign bride than for an average lady to seek out a beautiful foreign groom. I often see very average looking men with stunning girlfriends but a good looking man with an average girlfriend is a lot rarer. We have nothing to offer except perhaps wealth (if we have a decent job) and citizenship.

Our only real hope is to find a poor man who does not mind leaving his own country or to search in other Western countries. Even if we are good-looking we are still not desirable, because according to stereotype we have horrible personalities. :P

So when a man deliberately seeks out a foreign bride the above is implied. I've heard the above sentiments echoed by men themselves all too many times. It's a bit of a self-esteem crusher.
