That sooooo was not true for us. I'd say that fewer than half of our guests gave us gifts, not even a card. I wondered if gift-giving wasn't so big at UK weddings (of course hubster is clueless). On the other had, the US reception we had, everyone gave us a gift.

That's just rude! I know at Irish weddings a gift is expected...and God forbid if someone gives a dry-card (no cash). Gift giving and money giving is seen as a way of helping a new couple start out in life. But not to give anything?? Rude!!

Oh and registries aren't big there at all, nor baby-showers or anything like that. I don't know what it is...they don't like being told what to buy? I haven't a clue!

Yeah, I couldn't believe it when Aidan told me they don't do baby showers over there. Then, when I was living there and my niece was born, they had this HUGE christening party and everyone got presents for the her. I was like, "Oh...that's why there's no baby shower." But don't most people need presents before the baby is born?

I would never turn up to a wedding without a gift! It's true we don't go much in for registries, although that is happening alot more I notice....also the last wedding I went to the couple asked for vouchers from a particular shop. As for baby showers... but I am sure it will follow just as Halloween and Proms....

I know! I told my mother that we were looking at strollers and high-chairs and she was like "Oh no, don't do that, that's bad luck". Seriously, she nearly had a heart attack on the phone! It's a superstitious thing, they consider it bad luck to buy ANY baby stuff before the baby is born.

hehe...dry card!

I'll say I was a bit put off but having hubster clueless and saying that the most important thing was sharing the day with them, made me feel like I was being too materialistic. *shrug*

I understand registries being a touchy subject if it's just not in your culture, but honestly I'd be clueless as to what to get someone if they didn't have a registry. I love knowing that what I get them truly is something they want. And the beauty of registries is you can put a wisk on there or an expensive crystal vaaaaaaahze (vase), and anyone should be able to afford something.

I think the registry and gift giving is great! Most couples are poor upon marriage/first baby and really need those gifts, and will of course reciprocate to their friends who are getting married/having babies. I mean, it's much easier for 200 guests to each get a $40 or $50 dollar gift (or cheaper) for the bride and groom than for a bride/groom to furnish their entire apartment themselves! And likewise, I'll of course buy gifts for my friends and family when they get married :)

 I don't know about that....it is considered unlucky to buy to buy early on in the pregnancy...but I always had everything ready for my babies...

Whoa! I did not know that! :o

I had my dream princess wedding for under $3000 which included the airfare to get to Oregon. However, I have a lot of friends and family that were are talented and I am very good at delegating tasks and getting people to do things for free! Such as my make-up, hair, professional pics, video, decorating, and boquet arrangements. When two separate people came up to me and said it was the most beautiful wedding they have ever been to--Ifelt like the true frugal queen!

Aidan and I also had our dream wedding for under $3000!! We had an outdoor wedding at a historical state park here in Central Florida followed by a pot-luck reception! About 50 guests attended. My friend Sherry played her flute during the ceremony, and I played CD's during the reception. I designed my own dress and had it made for me by a seamstress. Our cake was from Publix (and it was beautiful!), and I made all my own centerpieces (wicker baskets filled with fruit) and decorations. I also made my own bouquet. Our theme was Autumn in Ireland, and it turned out beautiful!

Here are some pictures (I love showing them off)!

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! I love the dress... the pics outside... and your hair!

We took "have the wedding", and are about $30k into it now. We had a small ceremony first so this second time is an affirmation of vows, and my parents have gone all out for it. I <3 my mom and dad.

Same here. For our first wedding it was just me, my husband, and the J.O.P. This time we're having 130 guests and it's shaping up to be a lot of fun. :) If only the planning wasn't so damned stressful! :P

Pictures are absolutly beautiful...

as far as the choice... I'd choose the money ... .. You can have the wedding you wish.. get as fancy as you wish.. and still possibly have some left...

Its all relative to what you do.. and what you want.. Its your dream.. take it

What my dream is.. when Janak finally is able to make it.. .. is... .. use the service of my client who is a minister... willing to do our service.. .. .. we will drive to a state park.. Bridal Veil Falls. out in the Columbia Gorge.. here in Oregon.. beautiful.. anyone who wishes to watch is fine.. but.. this is my spot.. .. and where I wish to always remember as our spot.. My eldest daughter graduated from the Culinary school here in Portland.. and they have a AWSOME fine dining restraunt.. .. I will invite 10-20 friends. family people. to join us. .. nice 5course dinner.. beautiful.. and with that amount of people.. we get the party room.. and by telling them it is a wedding party.. we can possibly get the bakery students to do a small wedding cake too..

Having my daughter know the head chefs and instructors of the school sure do make a difference..
