Just take my hubby's name: AHmed or A7med . . . he raked me over the coals on the pronunciation of the "H" . . . he kept saying "it isn't ACHmed" . . . which is the way I hear a lot of people pronounce it . . . maybe Westerners only??? So I just started saying "it starts with 'AH' and is AH-med". That almost works . . . . I think that there is a lot of confusion on the H, KH, etc. and I am not so used to the numbers. Taking French helped with the rolling sounds . . . but it all takes practice and listening to someone who is a native speaker . . . but then again . . . it depends on which country . . they can be different!!!

I'm so glad my husband's name is Tamer  I still managed to pronounce it wrong at first, but then again, he pronounces Jennifer wrong too

Jennifer, Ahmed wanted to call me Cathy and I had tell him I prefer Catherine . . . seems like most of the Egyptians that met me ALWAYS wanted to shorten my name or give me some nickname. Catherine just sounds nicer than Cathy, LOL . . . my family still calls me Cathy and they seem to have real problems switching over too even after all this time :D:D .

I set out right fromt the start that I wouldn't be called Jenny. When I got to college, I asked everyone to call me either Jennifer or Jen.

But, my husband and I usually refer to each other by our nicknames, rahma (mercy in arabic) and beni (blessing in french) I have a hard time switching back to our real names when someone else is around.

Same here. I've always hated Jenny.

At work I go by Jennifer, but at home and with friends, it's Jenn

you guys are waaay past anything i can count up to... but i will add a little something. Speaking of the EIN or AYN however u want to spell it, i noticed the root pattern very early on in learning arabic, and found lots of words that when you *miniaturize* the item you are talking about for example :

Shugra - tree

Shogeira - little tree

asked my hubby if our name HUSSEIN was like a baby HASSAN... he just looked at me and cracked up. sounds right though dosen't it?
