and it totallllllllllly confuses me when the word has a number in it... how do you pronounce that?

The letters in the words tell you how to prouncouce or to put emphasis on a specific letter. Like when you say Habiby, you put but a 7 and say 7abiby to add the emphasis on the H. There are times when the doesn't need to be done. I think most of you are familiar with the arabic word Habla...you don't need a 7 there.

I will come up wiht a guide for this for you guys, but you in order to understand it, you have to be familiar with some arabic words and sounds.

Arabic contains certain sounds and letters that aren't in the english language. So, when we transliterate, there isn't always a one on one letter correlation. Some are obvious (meem ﻡ = m), and are standard across most types of transliteration. However, there are those tricky ones that different transliteration methods chose to represent with different roman letters. 'ayn ﻉ has been a pain in my butt since I started learning arabic. My throat just doesn't make that sound, and transliteraters don't agree on how it should be represented. Some of these tricky letters are sometimes represented by number (confused yet?)

I have had a lot of work on these sounds . . . some are easier than others.

Just take my hubby's name: AHmed or A7med . . . he raked me over the coals on the pronunciation of the "H" . . . he kept saying "it isn't ACHmed" . . . which is the way I hear a lot of people pronounce it . . . maybe Westerners only??? So I just started saying "it starts with 'AH' and is AH-med". That almost works . . . . I think that there is a lot of confusion on the H, KH, etc. and I am not so used to the numbers. Taking French helped with the rolling sounds . . . but it all takes practice and listening to someone who is a native speaker . . . but then again . . . it depends on which country . . they can be different!!!
