Ok, in a shameless ploy to boost my membership status, I'm creating a counting thread. Here's how it works:

1. We're counting in arabic. How high we get depends on how long our attention spans are.

2. A member posts one number, and must wait until another member posts the next number before they can post again.

3. Numbers should be written out. If you have an arabic keyboard, you can put the arabic numeral, but please also put the written out word too

4. As an added benefit, maybe I can learn to count past 100 :jest:

5. Maybe after we get through 10 numbers, someone who is very good at arabic can step in and make a list of those ten numbers in the correctly transliterated form.

Here are some basics of counting in arabic:

12-19 are slightly different from the form of 21 through 99.

12 in arabic is ithna ashra. Ithnan is arabic for 2 and ashra is arabic for ten. Twelve is essentially two ten. Number 12 through 19 follow this pattern. From 21 through 99, it's "normal." Twenty two in arabic is ithnan wa ishrun. Ithnan is two, wa is and and ishrun is twenty. Twenty two is two AND twenty.

Numbers that end in one follow a different pattern. One is wahid, so it would make sense that 11 would be wahid ashra. But no, grammar never makes sense. When one is in a number, it takes the form ahad. So, 11 would be ahad ashra

Did that make sense or did I just make it more confusing.

Have fun.

I don't count this way...it's new to me completely. I didn't know that there was different dialects in numbers

That's how my arabic prof. taught me. Maybe it's classical or modern standard? I'll run it by my husband and see if they count differently in egypt. How do you count?

Hmmm, maybe this will be toooo difficult with all of the different dialects.

Ashra = 10

Well 12-19 is tricky yes. but I can't think of a pattern to tie in with 1-9. I can list them all if you like, but I don't want to spoil the fun. I just posted how I say 11.

When we get to 20, you can post the list of 11 through 19 so we all learn something new :D Is the 20+ method about right though?

ithna ashra = 12

Don't worry, I feel the same way! I had to check in silverware and china once for an Egyptian aircraft, and the young Egyptian man that I was working with tried to teach me the numbers. I never did learn even one number. We did have a lot of fun though. He was the youngest member of the all-male team, so that was why he got stuck counting dishes. Then, when he had his back turned, his boss winked at the rest of us then asked him if he was sure he counted everything right. He turned red, started sweating, and insisted on recounting everything. He had no idea it was just a joke and the rest of us were trying not to laugh and let him know.

I guess I'll learn Arabic whenever I finish school. I did start trying before I went back to college, but that was 5 years ago so I don't remember much at all.
