This is the part that I find the most disturbing...

"Some said he is Muslim, an Internet-fed rumor that Obama's campaign has labored to dispel."

It certainly shows the gullibility of people and the powerful rumor mill the internet has become.

It also implies that being Muslim is a bad thing, somehow unAmerican, and that is disturbing.

True. Dirty campaigning tries to prey on people's prejudice. Twenty years ago, all it took was the face of black man convicted of raping a white woman in Mass. to undo Dukaksis' bid for the White House.

My dad and one of his closest friends both believe it. His middle name is 'hussein' therefore he is Muslim (duh why didn't i think of that). The media is lying about him not being muslim because the media is controlled by rich republicans who want obama to win the nom so the GOP can engineer another 9/11 right before the election and smear the muslim candidate and win. yay 4 more years.

May I ask - what is the level of education that father has?

They both have masters degrees.

The middle-name-religion link is very Indian, though. That's how they identify religion there. No one in India has "no religion", atheists don't exist lol. They do but they still identify as Hindus or Muslims or whatever. So his middle name is Hussein ergo he is Muslim.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Steven - My Dad and all his coffee-drinking buddies at Panera's believe the same. I don't know the education level of all these men, but my Dad has a high school education. He's also 76 years old and FOX TV plays in his household all day long, including conservative talk radio.

We went to dinner with Daddy and Mother a couple of weeks ago and he started this nonsense about Obama not being a 'native' American and also his being a 'Muslim'. Needless to say a pleasant evening meal was pretty nearly spoiled my reaction to this nonsense.

Ah, ok, but still...how long has your father lived here in America?

That's unfortunate. My father is 80 and for the most part, fairly open to thinking critically. He does shock me sometimes but I take it as senility...like when he says Orientals....oye!

My sister and I both say we don't understand where Daddy gets his 'politics' these days.

When Clinton got in trouble, Daddy was his biggest critic. Honestly, you would be hard pressed to find anyone in American who hated him more. On the day of the impeachment vote my Daddy sat glued to his chair waiting to crack open a bottle of expensive aged whiskey and celebrate the ejection from office.

He still hasn't gotten over it. William Jefferson Clinton is the anti-christ in his book.

All this hatred coming from my Daddy is so very hard to accept. He's the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back and the most loyal friend anyone could ask for. His bigotry is a very bitter pill for my sister and I to swallow.

Wow. It's a good thing that you didn't follow in his ideological footsteps...I can't imagine another ideologue here on VJ. :P
