When can my husband renew his license after it expires?

My husband just got his license 2 days ago but it expires feb. 24th...he wanted to go ahead and do the written test and the driving test so that later he wont have to do it again, which is what the DMV has already told him.

What I am wanting to know is once we send in his AOS packet, which will be sometime next week, wont we receive a NOA or something like that in the mail? and then we can go take that to the DMV and get his licensed re-newed for at least a year??

And after we send in the AOS packet, won't we receive something within a month??

Hi - Every state is different with this... if he already has a drivers license here does that mean he already has a social security number? In my state we can not get a drivers license without the social security number ... so we have to wait until the EAD is received (as you probably know after the EAD is received then you can go apply for the social security number)....

You could probably contact your DMV and ask them if it matters whether or not if your hubby renews his license while he is going through AOS.... IMHO it is 2 different things.

In my state we can not get a drivers license without the social security number ... so we have to wait until the EAD is received (as you probably know after the EAD is received then you can go apply for the social security number)....

oh okay, i should probably go ahead and call them and see what they say, their just jerks up there at my local DMV office!

But yah, he got his SS card, its temporary i guess, cuz it says 'FOR WORK ONLY' something on those lines...our DMV also needed a SS, they accepted the one he had, luckily! and he did his tests and passed! this was very recently, so im still thrilled about it

Do contact your local DMV as their procedures and policies vary from state to state. My husband had to have his EAD in hand OR his GC to apply for a DL here in Georgia. As for the SS Card, all card have "For Work Only" until you have your green card in hand. Once you have your green card, you have to go back to the SS Office. They make a copy of your spouse's GC and order a new SS Card without the work authorisation phrase on it. These were our experiences, it may be different for others.
