for what I know , as soon you get your EAD, you have to go back to SS# to change your status...my advice is go back there and show your EAD card

That advice is incorrect. They won`t change the card wording until she gets her green card.

Uh oh..lol..mass confusion setting in  Do I HAVE to go down to the SS office yet?**smacks self in head** I would hate to go apply for a job and find out I have to have my status updated first(we all know how slow the gov't can be) but I would HATE HATE to go sit there for 3 hours to be told theres nothing to be done yet...

S

Like you I already had my SSN and it said the same thing. I didn't bother to go to the SSA and I have a job. So I don't think you need to go because it would probably be a waste of time because you aren't going to be filling out any forms and they won't give you a new card.

Thank you so much! you just saved me a much dreaded unnecessary trip!(the last time I was at the SS office..it took FOREVER!!)

i suggest you go to the SS office and update it and tell them you are able to work now. and i do think they will give you a new card that say authorized to work. because some employers want to see the SS card not just the EAD card. you have to update your SS regardless anytime your status or situation changes. when you get EAD, green card, naturalize, i believe you have to update it with them. I may be wrong, but if i was you i would play it safe and make sure to update it with them.

From personal experience, nothing is going to change with ur SS card until you get a green card so you don't need to go to the SSA office....your current SS card says you are only allowed to work with a permit...the EAD is your permit....u need to show your employer both the SS and the EAD card....I have had my SS card since 2000 and I have gone from F-1, to OPT (when I had an EAD card), to H1B and now AOS and have not changed my SS card or had to re-visit the SSA office....

Instead of going and waiting forever at the office, you could try calling their service number. I think they are pretty helpful and that way you won't have to go to the office!

All the touches seem to be around the same transfer date (give or take a week or so)....maybe it's time for green cards!

I really do not understand how this confusion came about. The SS card says valid for work only with DHS authorization. The EAD card proves DHS authorization to work. I guess that means your SS card is valid for work...

The green card allows you to live and work in the US. Therefore after you get it, you do not need another form of authorization to work. This is when you would need to have your SS card changed.

Don't waste your time going to the SSA. You won't get anything from it!!!

When I applied for my SS card the first time I asked when I would be required to return to update my information and was told not until my greencard arrived. The statement "not valid for work without DHS authorization" is still true at this point in the process for most of us. You can't have that statement removed from your SS card yet because we are still not eligible to work without our EAD. Hope that helps a little. This is how i understand it at least.

If anyone has gone and been told differently please share, cause I don't really want to get in trouble with my employer.

What I mean is, he/she needs to go back to SS office to show the work permit..i know they won't change the wording on the SSN card, but at least they can update that the applicant is legal to work in the US..

That is incorrect too. Update where for what???????

She needs to do NOTHING apart from present her EAD with her social security when she is asked after getting a job.

Please check the advice you're giving out.

Yes you ARE wrong.

You do NOT have to tell the USCIS that you have an EAD.

You're correct, you only need to update after your green card and even that's optional.

I may be sensitive, but it REALLY bugs me when others persist in posting information they aren't sure about. I can understand if you're the only person responding, but when others have given the CORRECT advice, why would persist in saying stuff you obviously know nothing about???
