A man who uses a racist term is... using a racist term. Obviously, torturing is a far worse offense in the grand scheme of things. But there are many other words to choose from to insult those people without lowering yourself to using racial epithets.

I don't think you can "earn the right" to use racial slurs. Maybe it's just a different perspective, but to me, a racial slur is an insult to every member of the race, regardless of who it is specifically directed at.
