I am getting ready to file for my fiance's K-1 petition. My fiance is Filipina, and has never had a passport. Do we need to start compiling documents to get her a passport??? I am confused about the "VISA" term, because I received a Visa stamp in my passport when I entered the Philippines, not when I left the U.S. She has to get a "VISA" BEFORE she can leave the Philippines. Can somebody please clarify this for me. I feel like an idiot for asking such a simple question. I just need to know if we need to obtain her passport , while we are waiting for the NOA2.

she really needs to get a passport. she can start collecting the requirements that she can start processing as sometimes takes months to get it.

here's the requirements http://www.dfa.gov.ph/consular/passport-eng.htm

she can apply online or just go to the nearest DFA office in her area. Online application takes forever for now.

She should get a passport yes. The K1 is put into her passport.

Sometimes they take awhile to get, so I would have her get one now.

Best of luck! :)

Hi! Regarding your question why u didnt a visa stamp when u left US its because u have multiple visa in Phil.we dont really require visa for tourists, unlike in US,UK,and some first world countries,u will go under go so much scrutiny before u will obtain a visa. With your fiancee here in Phil, i suggest that she 'll get a passport as early as now,

she'll need her Authenticated BC from NSO,2 or more valid ID's.

DEFINITELY SHE WILL NEED A VISA For her To go to US.

Thank you for the quick responses  Now I was just told that she needs to attend her CFO seminar BEFORE she can get her passport. Is this true??? I am going to attend her interview, when the time comes, and I wanted her to attend the seminar in Manila, while we waited for her Visa.

to better understand the terms here are the definitions i found on answers.com

passport ( ) n. An official government document that certifies one's identity and citizenship and permits a citizen to travel abroad.

the passport is a MUST for one to travel to another country. its advisable to secure a passport at this early stage of your visa journey.

as to your visa question, a visa is defined as :

visa n. An official authorization appended to a passport, permitting entry into and travel within a particular country or region.

it is country or region dependent. The US is one of those countries that require a previously issued visa prior to travel (although there are countries that enjoy the VWP, the Philippines is not on the list). However, if she will only travel to other south-east asian countries, she gets the visa stamped on her passport upon entry to that particular SEA country, per an existing ASEAN treaty.

goodluck on your visa journey!

no. she needs to have her passport stamped by the CFO after her visa issuance before she can travel to the US. you are applying for K1 right? the CFO seminar is not a pre-requisite to the issuance of a passport using one's maiden name. the seminar you refer to would only apply to married individuals who would opt to use their foreign spouses last names in their passport applications.

there are DFA offices which require a certificate from CFO but it depends on your purpose of application. DFA is unpredictable...they sometimes require too much requirements which is the cause of delay.

when applying for her passport, just put "travel" for her purpose for an easier processing. I payed a travel agent when I applied and it caused me no hassle at all. I just showed up for verification and got my passport in a week. CFO cert wasn't asked from me.

she can attend the seminar even though she doesn't have her passport. the passport/visa is required when she registers and gets her certification from the CFO prior to leaving the country.

the guidance counseling seminar is for filipinos who is marrying/married to foreign nationals and will be staying outside Philippines.

I'm from Cebu, Philippines. With my case before, we hire an agency to do all the paper works since both of us were working and too busy. It was the agency who filed for my passport and I just showed up in DFA for personal appearance and after 9 days I got my passport. I had my CFO seminar after I got my visa. But I guess, if you choose to file your passport personally, they will require you to undergo a CFO seminar first.

It's my understanding that if you check the box claiming the reason you need a passport, is because you have a foreign fiance, and want to travel to be with them, you will be required to take the cfo seminar first.

Since I had already applied for a K1 visa for my fiance prior to her applying for her passport, we decided that she should admit that when filling out the passport application.

We didn't want anyone claiming she gave false information when filling out the passport application.
