Hi Everyone,

I am thinking about going the direct consular filing route, but must show husband will not be burden to the state.

Since I will living in El Salvador, as I have for the past year, I also will not be making any money in the US. (I think I will work in El Salvador if I can though) My question is this: Will the joint sponsor have to make enough for two additinal people, that is am I included, or just enough for my new husband?

My confusion is if the joint sponsor have to meet the poverty line minimum for a three person household (me and husband and the co-sponsor) or two person household (husband and co-sponsor)?.

I am able bodied and would be working when I get there, as would my husband once he gets a permit.

Thanks!

P.S. If any of you have gone this route, would you recommend going back to the US after the DCF so that the co-sponsor only needs to make enough for two people instead of three?

Hi there, my husband (a new zealander) and myself (USC) went the DCF route here in Auckland New Zealand. I have been living here for the past 5 years so I too was concerned about the whole sponsorship thing. We had my step dad sponsor my husband and as the sponsor his household DOES NOT include me. His household only included him and my mom (his wife) and my husband so he had to put 3 on the form.

Dont forget that his sponsor can also put any assets they have down, if they own a house and stuff (if they have a mortgage than they need to put the difference between the mortage and the value of the house). Also put any assets you guys have. The stupid lady at the consulate told me to put $0 as our assets on my form since we dont live in the U.S. then i brought the form in and the other lady asked if we had anything that we'll be selling when we move to the states and we do, our car, tv's my husbands musical equipment etc so she said to put it down, because remember you still need to fill out a sponsorship form even though you dont make any U.S. income....but even if you dont have any assets it doesnt matter as long as the joint sponsor can prove that they make $17,112 (thats the amount for a 2 person household - the co-sponsor and your husband to be). Does your sponsor have any kids or anyone living with them?

Anyway I would definitely suggest DCF its much faster! Good luck!! I'm moving back to the US on Feb 29th with my husband after living in NZ for 5 years!! Yay!!

Wow,

thank you so much. You have really helped me breath a little easier. I was quite concerned I would have to find someone that would make so much money. And you are right about the assets I plan to work over there and hopefully get some savings going before we move. Luckily we do not have to worry about filing for children because he has no dependents, it is always so much harder when you have little ones to worry about too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Nydia

P.S. Congrats on your trip to the US, I hope you two are very happy and you get to show your husband all the beautiful things about your home country.

Yup, you can count assets that can be converted to liquid in one year (me thinks): i.e. house, car, savings, the like. If you are doing DCF you have to reside in El Salvador - no need for you to go back to the US (besides I don't know if your moving would impact your petition in any way).

Buena suerte, L.
