Wait for SSN number to work??

Thanks L. So did you get your number issued AT the office or do you wait for a card to come in the mail? If you do wait for it to come in the mail, how long did it take to come in the mail after you went to the office?

All SSN cards come in the mail from SSA Headquarters, no matter how you applied. Now once the SSN has been assigned you can go back to the office ( normally the next day) and have them tell you the number if you don't feel like waiting for the card.

I think I waited all of 10 days and just showed up at the office with my passport and my Washington State ID. I then went back 48 hours later and they printed the number for me. The actual card came in like 2 weeks after that.

Take proof of age, identity and work authorized alien status. Proof of age is not needed for a replacement card.

Birth certificate, passport and I-551 card or MRIV with temporary I-551 language should be enough to take into the SSA office.

If you apply in the SSA office the amount of time to be assigned an SSN is going to depend on the amount of time it takes SSA to verify your immigration status. If you are luck they can do it while you are at the office. If not you could be waiting weeks or even months. You just have to keep going back to the office to make sure they are following up when they should.

So you dont suggest going to the office until at least a week after he arrives into the country?? We fly in on a Friday and I was thinking of going on Monday!!

God no. Wait a couple of days sister - though no one says you cannot just go to the office; but you do risk they giving you the bureaucratic speech of the week as in "YOU JUST GOT HERE YADA YADA YADA" cr@p.

They better not give my husband any bureaucratic bull ****, especially after going through the whole waiver process (what a freakin nightmare!) to get where we are today - i'm done with all of that!! Anyway thanks for your advice

Well read this so you will know what;s going on

In some states, you cannot get a state ID or driver's license without a SSN, so just keep that in mind. I just mentioned it because I saw one of the previous posters mention it.

Ditto - always check your state's regulations. WA did allow me to get the state ID right away, but we're all commies here ;)

As per the bureaucratic speech.... believe me, he'll get it over and over and over from A, B, C and other government agencies.

Wait, so he's going to need a NY state ID in order to get a ssn?? I thought he just needed his passport, birth certificate and proof that he's got his CR-1 visa to get a ssn??

This is my experience with the whole SSN thing. I know the rules are different from state to state and we live in NC so this is how it went for us.

We did DCF and ticked the box for a SSN too. But for some reason they never issued me one. So I had to go down to the SS office and re-file for one. All I needed was my birth certificate and my passport. They were also able to give me my SSN before I received the SS card in the mail.

I know down here nobody will touch you if you do not have a valid SSN.

A little note too. In NC you cannot get a driver license without:

1. Original SS card - it's not enough to know the number

2. Picture ID - in this case your passport will do

3. Your greencard - if you did DCF. You MIGHT be able to convience them to issue a driver license that is good for 1 year - until the date your entry visa in your passport expires, which is 1 year from your entry date. Otherwise no greencard, no driver license.
