Does anyone know what the time limit is on getting your passport changed to your married name ? In other words, how long can you go around with a passport in your maiden name before it becomes a problem?

We had to get Claudeth a new passport, hers was expiring so we changed her name at the same time. Is there an embassy close to you? You might also want to take a look at their web page, there may be info on how to do the change.

I just sent away my passport renewal (my old one expired in july 2007) a week ago to Washington and the old passport is in my maiden name. I don't think I read the instructions right and forgot to send my marriage certificate..oops my bad! I got a call from a nice Northern Irish man at the embassy who told me I had made a boo boo and that if I mailed my marriage cert to him, then he would have my passport sent out within a few days.

From the info that he gave me, it doesn't sound like it takes too long

I wasn't aware there was a timeline for renewing your passport to your married name. My current passport has 8 years to run so I haven't been in any hurry to change it. I haven't seen any info that suggests this needs to be done within a certain timeframe but I could absolutely be wrong !! Ive recently travelled on my maiden name passport and there were no problems.

There's no real time limit, the UK govt. doesn't care what name you have on your passport.

I was married close to 20 years and kept my own name on my passport. This time round I've been married almost a year and still not bothered to change my passport. The only problem is when you travel you have to book your ticket in the name that's on the passport.

Yeh since I moved here 2.5 years ago Ive travelled outside the US several times and never had a problem with my passport being in my maiden name, but this most recent trip arriving back from England in Jan at the US customs a customs guy asked me if I had changed my name on my passport (he was looking right at it and could see I hadn't) so I said no I hadn't been able to get to it yet.. and he sarcastically replied back "You've been married two years and you havn't had time yet?".... I told him " I never said I havnt had TIME.. I said I havn't been able to get to it yet"...(meaning the embassy. Its in Washington I live in Texas). Then he gave me a mouthful about getting it changed but I wondered if there is a time limit or if he was just throwing his weight around... I wouldnt mind.. but he was foreign born himself and had an accent I could barely understand

As far as I'm aware, as long as your ticket is in the name on your passport, and you bring your marriage certificate along with your green card, that's good enough. The customs was probably just trying to throw his weight around like you said... although I haven't travelled out of the US yet so I haven't had any experience.
