  1. 1. Say that the stimulus package passes and you get an extra $600 or $1200, what will you do with the money?

    • Spend it on things that I WANT but cannot afford
      3
    • Spend it on things that I NEED but can't afford
      11
    • Pay off debt
      26
    • Spend it freely, as this is the purpose of the money
      4
    • Save it for later expenses

I find it ironic that if this whole thing comes through that our portion will go out of country to pay down more of my student loans back in Canada. So much for stimulating the American economy! :P

I think the quote was "rewarding failure".....

So I suppose that as an educator at a public school "I" am a failure, based on the aforementioned criteria (income)...

I guess producing informed citizens (I teach American Government and History) makes me a failure...

I hear ya sistah. I hear ya.

Wonder how many people are saying "pay off debt" because it's the responsible thing to do, but will really go run out and buy that new electronic gizmo, shoes, furniture, etc.... hehehe ;)

I'm going to owe the IRS. By the time we get that refund, I may need it for bail money!

Yep. Thanks to the ex-husband my last 2 tax returns have gone to IRS. It really sucks when you didn't know about the innocent-spouse waiver....

Here's what I wanna know. How does one even know what one uses the money for?

I'm guessing most people will take the check and first deposit it into an account that already has other money.

Once the funds are comingled..... when you take some out to spend it on something, which money did you spend? The newly added funds or the previously existing funds or a mix of it? Unless you spend all of it in one shot, it's not clear which money you spent.

Money is fungible....

You can budget every last dollar. But how will you identify which dollar came from where?

Like I said, money is fungible.

Wait- I think I know what you mean.

Yeah, but if you say, ok, this month we have 600 more dollars than we expected. Where should we spend it? Then you know, basically, what you're doing with the surplus. You're jus' splitting hairs now.

You're saying, before they receive the cheese, they've already allocated all existing funds to certain expenses. And that whatever additional expense they approve with the additional cheese.... is what they used the cheese on. I get it, assuming that's what you meant.

It's not really splitting hairs. It's a valid point when you have cash reserves and the additional income just becomes part of it and all discretionary spends come out of the reserves.

Your point about budgeting every dollar is a good one, though.

Yep, and I'm pretty sure this is one of the sillier conversations I've had recently. :)
