You decide what you want your POE to be.

The consulate is not involved with that

Your point of entry is the first US airport or other boarder crossing where you show your passport. Your travel itinerary is your choice.

I booked a plane ticket. Your point of entry can be wherever you choose it to be. Simply book your ticket and your point of entry will be the first airport you land at on arrival in the US.

The POE is just the name for the offical spot where the person crosses the border and activates their visa. It could be passport control at an airport or a crossng gate on a road betwen two countries. Of course, you decide that location!

It's your choice for the most part. My only limitations where the flights offered by the airlines.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

One word of caution avoid flights into Canada, and then crossing into the USA, many airports in Canada act as US POE, and may activate visa there, and then you may have problem at the border at the 2nd POE.

Forgive me but what is this 2nd POE? You do not go through the pre-clearance station until you are boarding a flight to the USA... so if you decide to fly to Canada and then land border cross, what is the problem?

YMMV

Canada sounds like it is similar to Ireland. When traveling from the Dublin and Shannon airports, everyone who is US bound goes through immigration there. Once you hit US soil, you breeze through customs since the forms have already been checked. I was curious if any other countries did that, and it looks like Canada does.
