Kamal got an email saying his travel document is approved. Does anyone know how long it will be before his employment document will be done. His interview is scheduled for March 12 which isn't far. But we can't get his ssn without that and without that we can't do other things like file taxes jointly.

Why can't you get a SSN number yet? My husband got one within days of his arrival in the US. Is it different in different states?

It must be... my husband also got his SSN w/in about 2 weeks of his arrival. I have read where others cannot. Go figure.

To the OP, there is no telling about how soon you will get EAD, but in the case of my hubby's, it arrived 4-7 days after the AP. Good luck!

Depending on the visa class it can be difficult to get. They hassled us, even with a temp EAD stamp from NY. They also only give it up to 2 weeks before your original visa expires, so it's probably too late now if they didn't do it earlier.

I think you can ask for a SSN for ID purposes, but it will say that he is not authorized to work.

When kamal arrived here he came into Chicago. And we waited two weeks after he arrived, we were married by then, they said we had to wait for his status to change for his ssn.

And his interview is the day before his visa expires. Is that gonna affect us in anyway? They won't send him back will they?

They shouldn't... technically his status is "pending" until approval (or denial), so he's good to go for as long as it takes to get his PR card. The EAD would have to be renewed upon expiration, however.

a quick look at your timeline indicates you are a k-1 visa.

this is the vj link for obtaining a social security number:

link

he is eligible for a ssn but from the poe entry date on your timeline - 2007-10-15 - both of you waited too long to apply for one. from the link above it states "Many SSA offices will not allow you to file for a SSN if your I-94 is about to expire (generally 14 days prior"to the expiration on your I-94."

get an itin so you can file taxes jointly in the interim.

Getting an ITIN can also be problematic. We were unable to get Ahmed's SSN because the dingbat at the POE entered his DOB as 1928. When I asked the SSA about getting an ITIN, they said no, because he is eligible for an SSN. By the time USCIS fixed Ahmed's DOB on their files, his I-84 had long since expired and we have nothing to prove he can have either the ITIN or SSN.

However, it is my fervent wish that the OP's local SSA office is a great deal more generous in this department because an ITIN would be a fantastic fix.

We were able to file for my husband's SSN 3 days after his arrival here on a K-1. His card arrived two weeks later. His EAD was held up in some black hole they said so we made an info pass, 4 months after filing AOS. They fixed it in the system but it arrived just 1 week before his AOS interview and his green card 2 weeks later. He never needed the EAD. If you have questions in that it is taking too long and they say it's approved, make an info-pass to check on it.
