That's going to piss off a lot of people here on legitimate student or work business, like every grad student doing advanced research in Ann Arbor. Oh well! Good for VJ Michiganders to know: their state has gone insane with security theatre.

Foreign students should be able to use their foreign licences, then. Driving is a right, not a privilege.

Holding a US driver's license may be a privilege, but driving is not. If the DMV tells them "you can't

have a US licence", they'll have to allow the use of foreign licences. I don't see any other way.

It's very hard, even if you have a valid foreign license, to get long-term insurance to drive in the U.S. Plus, lots of foreign grad students don't hold licenses because they didn't have the opportunity to drive in their home country, and so they came here (legally!) and learned (legally!) and took the test. Or people who come here as students, then move to H1Bs, get licenses and drive to work. (Or are here long enough that their licenses back home expire. You get the idea.) Or people whose green cards are delayed by years due to security checks, and thus can't get a job even with an EAD.

I don't believe driving is a right, but I do believe that if you're here legally and have a reason to drive, like school or work, and are otherwise legally eligible, that restricting it to legal permanent residents (as opposed to those legally present) and citizens is ridiculous. Is this supposed to stop terrorism? Illegals?

Well, no, technically, it is not as right. But what are legitimate people here on legal visas supposed to do for transportation? Most of Michigan is hardly a metropolis and public transportation is not bountiful! What MAWILSON is saying is they have a right to be here and a right to get around!

Believe what you like, but there have been numerous court cases in which judges ruled that driving is a right.
