i just looked in a cookbook i have "the foods of israel today" by joan nathan and it means stuffed veggies in here too. stuffed with a rice/tomato/etc mixture. yum.

my husband's mom makes something similar expect its stuffed with meat with a little rice. and covered in a tomato sauce (like a loose chermoula)

I made a version of this the other night - in the South we call it stuffed bellpeppers! :P I stuffed them w/ a mixture of rice, meat, spices, onion, celery, cheese and topped w/ a little breadcrumbs - baked for 45 min on 350. YUM!

The mixture I use for mahshi is:

2 cups rice

1 lb finely diced meat or chili meat (lamb or beef)

2 tsp of B7ar (arabic all spice mix)

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

4tbs olive oil or vegetable oil or if you dare Samneh lol

mix all together.

Doodle, my mom's friend who is from Iraq add tomato paste to this which I don't like but maybe that is more of what you are used to?

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

Yeah but they make it without any meat and I think they put dill in it.

I made that the other day and loved it! My hubby doesn't like the tomato paste in it, but I do. It was too much work for my taste however. I hate the Kafta stuff...bleh! Wish I could find some good recipes that both my husband and I like.

My mother in law ships it to me  Everyone makes it a bit different but I found this recipe for the spice mix online

2 tablespoons ground black pepper

2 tablespoons paprika

2 tablespoons ground cumin

1 tablespoon ground coriander

1 tablespoon ground cloves

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

Mix all ingredients well.

Store in an airtight container or in freezer.

*** A great idea would be to make, wrap in a beautiful bottle, decorate and give as a gift. Not everyone is aware of this spice, its great in many dishes, and gives a nice exotic flavor***.
