We had beans and bread for dinner. Dinners haven't been much because we are in - checking out the fast food stage - here, apparently. Yesterday we had chick-fil-a. It was pretty good. But enough with the fast food! and fried chicken from Albertsons! well in moderation, but I have eaten more fast food this week than I probably have in 6 months in Canada.

Indian Cooking Recipe : Vegetable Curry

Mmmm. That sounds yummy, Desigal. I actually made that a couple of weeks ago with a biryani paste I'd brought with me from Canada. They have an amazing selection of ethnic spices and foods in Canada. But I'm all out now so...... time to make a trip back to Canada!!!! post-21394-1209143614.gif

Chick-fil-a is pretty good. I remember the first time I saw one when my husband lived in Maryland. Every time we passed it I would wonder what it was. Finally one day I said to him "What's a Chick Filla?" Learned how to pronounce it after that. Popeyes has good chicken too.

Domino's Pizza Delivery Expert Abbas is on his way with my pizza!!! Drive safely Abbas!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

trying out a new recipe today... throw a can of chicken broth and can of tomatoes (the recipe called for Rotel but I just used the Italian diced tomatoes) in a sauce pan stir in 1 cup of rice .. throw some chicken tenders on top and sprinkle with salt and pepper and garlic powder... and cover and cook for about 20 minutes...

We had some 'normal' food, Pork Chops, potatoes, yams and salad. It was good, funny, nothing tastes the same as it does in Canada (think that might have been mentioned before :hehe: ) - not bad, just not the same.

Even the yams are a different color (lighter orange) and a different texture. Now i'm sure there are a gazillion different varieties of yams, but they look the same on the outside!

I think I read somewhere that what Canadians think are yams are actually sweet potatoes in the States, or is it vice versa? Anywho.

We're having Swiss Chalet tonight -- yippee!

Learn the difference between a sweet potato and a true yam

Yam or sweet potato, what in the world is it? Many people use these terms interchangeably both in conversation and in cooking, but they are really two different vegetables.

Sweet Potatoes

Popular in the American South, these yellow or orange tubers are elongated with ends that taper to a point and are of two dominant types. The paler-skinned sweet potato has a thin, light yellow skin with pale yellow flesh which is not sweet and has a dry, crumbly texture similar to a white baking potato. The darker-skinned variety (which is most often called "yam" in error) has a thicker, dark orange to reddish skin with a vivid orange, sweet flesh and a moist texture.

Current popular sweet potato varieties include Goldrush, Georgia Red, Centennial, Puerto Rico, New Jersey, and Velvet.

Yams

The true yam is the tuber of a tropical vine (Dioscorea batatas) and is not even distantly related to the sweet potato.

Slowly becoming more common in US markets, the yam is a popular vegetable in Latin American and Caribbean markets, with over 150 varieties available worldwide.

Generally sweeter than than the sweet potato, this tuber can grow over seven feet in length.

The word yam comes from African words njam, nyami, or djambi, meaning "to eat," and was first recorded in America in 1676.

The yam tuber has a brown or black skin which resembles the bark of a tree and off-white, purple or red flesh, depending on the variety. They are at home growing in tropical climates, primarily in South America, Africa, and the Caribbean.

Yams contain more natural sugar than sweet potatoes and have a higher moisture content. They are also marketed by their Spanish names, boniato and ñame.

Could have been a sweet potato !

Anyway, we checked out krystal's today, had those little burgers. They taste like pork. Anyway, they were ok but not something I would want often.

Not sure what's for dinner, we really need to go grocery shopping.

We had sausage on a bun with homemade fries. Or, at least, my husband had sausage on a bun with homemade fries. I got caught up in making his lunch for tomorrow (he's working), as well as homemade chicken soup for Monday (he's working late that day) so I never actually got around to eating. Maybe later.
