tomato and leek omelettes with swiss cheese, toast and a tossed salad

Edited by Kathryn41

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Carla, do you ever use all purpose flour in your breadmaker?

I only had 1 cup of bread flour left, so for the other 2.25 cups I threw in all purpose, didn't notice a huge difference and I think the taste was actually a bit better! I only had one piece so hard to judge the taste just yet.

So I bbqed the steaks last night, wandered off and burnt them a bit - but they were still edible and pretty good  had spinach and a baked potato with them.

Not sure about dinner tonight, i'm thinking pork chops.

Yeah trailmix...I've only ever used all purpose flour. I know there are so many different kinds of flour here, and I never really knew why there was a difference, so I just used the old standby which was the all-purpose. I always thought the bread maker bread was good, I just hated that blade being in the bottom of all my loafs! Does this not bother you? Seems like such a waste. Are people perhaps going in before it starts cooking and just removing the dough, taking out the blade, then putting it back in the maker?

I was also making way too many loafs of bread of say white, or whole wheat, and we're both into artisian breads and flax meal etc. I found few recipes that I could really use in my breadmaker for these types of breads.

Also, no counter room really, and we were eating too much bread I'm thinking... :hehe:

Help dispel these myths for me!

Last night we had a cesear salad the I put in scallops, shrimp and tortellini. It's an excellent full course meal. We had garlic bread with it.

No idea about tonight.

Interesting! Well my Husband stopped at the store last night for some more flour, among other things and I asked him to pick up the all purpose - as my Sister and I were discussing (she just got her breadmaker too, we have decided we have given each other one for Christmas) - it seems strange that for a gazillion years people just used all purpose for bread, then a machine comes out and you now all of a sudden need special flour?

The blade on mine sometimes stays in and mostly doesn't - my Sister was saying, what about this blade in the bottom and i'm saying...ummm no - then the next loaf it did it, however removing the blade from the loaves on this one is a non-issue really since the blade is so small (maybe 2 inches long), I just cut a tiny hole in the bottom when it happens and it comes out pretty clean.

I like artisan breads too, that will be my next breadmaker thing I think - when I made bread bowls for stew last week I just had the machine make the dough and baked it in the oven, also did the same with krikit's pizza dough recipe. Basically I think if it is any kind of bread dough - I am going to try it in my breadmaker.

Yes, the first couple of loaves I think we ate quite quickly, now since some of that novelty has worn off, I think it will just be like every other loaf of bread

Hey Carla and trailmix...I'm not sure about your bread machine, but mine actually has an alarm that goes off when the kneading is done so that i can take the blade out. If you can take your blade out I'd suggest it. I hate that whole in the bottom of my loaf too! Also, if you need recipes for a more artisan loaf I've got some that came with my breadmaker if you'd like.

Do you find that you need to babysit your dough? Maybe it's because I'm making spelt bread that I have to watch to make sure it comes together alright.

Hi Ateam,

No mine doesn't. I don't babysit the bread at all - i put the stuff in and I don't look at it again until it is done

Tonight I am going to make my own Alfredo sauce, so that with some pasta and italian sausage. I would like to have a salad too but no ingredients for that!

Here is the recipe I am going to try (2 servings - found at Allrecipes):

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons butter

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 clove garlic, crushed

3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

DIRECTIONS

Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium low heat. Add cream and simmer for 5 minutes, then add garlic and cheese and whisk quickly, heating through. Stir in parsley and serve.

You're lucky trailmix! I wish I didn't have to watch the dough, but I think that it's because of the spelt flour. It seems to absorb liquid differently than regular all purpose flour. It's alright though. It really is worth it in the end though! My husband LOVES bread, and so do I, but due to my wheat allergy we don't normally have bread because I can't control myself and I end up hurting big time afterwards! This way, with spelt bread he doesn't feel like he's missing out on anything, and it's really yummy, even though it's a little denser and nuttier than regular whole wheat bread.
