My mum has read them for as long as I can remember....and has never seen someone she's known.... unless she already knew they'd died.

Well, to be truthful.... my Mom does volunteer work for a Seniors residence, and she also volunteers at, and keeps her connections to, the local hospital. (Retired Supervisory RN.) So she kinda knows a lot of people who are headed to the obits anyway.

My opinion why certain deaths get more coverage than others, apart from the celebrity status, is that some death's have a quick and easy explanation. Mother Theresa died of old age there was no speculation as to why she died old queenies mother died of old age, again no speculation.

Other deaths are mysterious or have 'conspiracy theory' overtones. Was it suicide, accidental death, murder? Princess Diana, was it a tragic accident or was 'the palace' involved. Anna Nicole, was it suicide or accidental etc. If the general public can't get the answers quickly, the news will continue to cover it until a) there is some conclusion or B) the public get bored of the speculation.
