Is it serious?

My husband got a notice in the mail saying that he failed to to appear and wasn't validly excused from jury duty.

Then it says if he doesn't contact the office asap he will be summoned to appear in superior court.

He's very forgetful you see.

In all seriousness now, have him contact the office asap. It should be fine.

He needs to follow it up. I was in a 4 year battle with NY state over a missed jury duty when I lived in ENGLAND. It showed up on my credit report - whicH is the only reason I knew about it!!!!

Here, in St. Louis, they send the sheriff's department to retrieve you the very morning you fail to show up. If they find you, they drag you in. If they don't find you, they send out that summons notice. You call and they require you to choose from one of three dates to appear for JD. If you do not call, they will send out a summons to appear before another court judge and at the very least you can be fined. I know of some people that have spent a few hours in jail and been fined for this very thing.

Yea he's at work now. He'll call them tomorrow.

Is there a hefty fine involved??

Ahh now I am sooo worried. Damnit, I think he should wear post-it notes on his forehead sometimes because he is SO forgetful. :(

Depends on the jurisdiction. I know here in Middlesex County NJ they're not too tough about it.

Next time anyone has it, they should call me. Come up with a good disguise and I'll stand in. I LOVE jury duty.

Here (Maricopa County), they give you at least one no-show before they start to get ornery. I missed an appearance because I mixed up the dates, so I called. The lady said, "Don't worry, we'll send you another summons!"

The Sheriff's Department here certainly doesn't have the resources to send someone to find you for one no-show! People ignore jury notices all the time. As long as he calls and has them send another notice, he should be fine. It's repeated no-shows that can get you in trouble.
