have you tried Trader Joe's or Whole foods market?

For those of you who like DARE cookies and crackers, I was surprised to see these at Trader Joe's too! Considering I used to live right down the road in Kitchener from the factory

Also Whole Foods Market 365 brand ketchup.....not a bad imitation of Canadian Heinz...slightly different, yet very good. and no High Fructose CS. $1.99/ decent sized bottle

Wiz(USC) and Udella(Cdn & USC!)

Took me forever to find this thread, but I cant find Shreddies cereal in any grocery store here in Georgia. Is Shreddies cereal a Canadian thing? I'm really craving them badly. I'd ask my mom to ship me some down from Canada, but she's in a crabby mood cause she found out I was pregnant and I won't be "there with her" for everything. Anyone know where I can get me some?

Sorry Mary, I'm not sure where to find Shreddies. I've just moved down here myself and I knew that there was an abundance of HFCS, but I'm still absolutely amazed. It's kind of strange to have to read the labels of products that I'm used to, just to make sure. The grocery store looks SO different. The brands here are so foreign. At the WinCo here in Boise I found Organic Heinz Ketchup, no HFCS! YAY! I guess most things will be made from scratch from now on, at least for us!

A cereal my wife likes that is available in both Canada and the U.S. is called Puffins. It comes in several different flavors, including original, cinnamon, peanut butter, and honey rice.

As for HFCS, I don't really see how ingesting large quantities of either sugar or HFCS is good for you. Both will make you gain weight and therefore, contribute to health risks such as type-II diabetes. Instead of complaining about HFCS and thinking sugar is fantastic (when neither is good for you), people should only have either in moderation. That's really the key with anything -- binge on any type of food, even if it's supposedly "healthy" and it'll soon become bad for you.

Hey hon...

No, Shreddies are a Canadian product.

From Wikipedia:

Shreddies is a breakfast cereal sold in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and New Zealand, produced by Post Cereals and General Mills, consisting of malted squares of inter-woven whole grain wheat.

Shreddies has been made in the UK since 1955. It was produced under the Nabisco name until the brand in Canada was purchased in 1993 by Post Cereals and then later in 1995 by Kraft General Foods.

Although not marketed in the United States, Kraft Foods has the trademark rights in the U.S

You may be able to find some at the international foods isle (unlikely though)

Sigh...

I have a whole list of stuff I'm taking down with me.

I agree Marilyn, HFCS is worse than regular sugar. I'm by no means advocating regular sugar, that's for sure, but as someone who eats mostly fresh fruits, veggies, meats, etc and very little prepackaged food, I'm disappointed to see HFCS as the second or third ingredient in bread, or salad dressing, etc. My issue with it is that it's everywhere and it seems like it's in everything. That being said, I am on the lookout for it cause I've been severely obese and am now on my way down to a healthy weight and I am NOT going to regain any of the 90 lbs that I've lost because of hidden HFCS!

Completely it is!!!

HFCS is sooooo horrible for you..omg bleh!

and btw Amy, I wouldn't call what you weighed "severely obese" hon...

If you were like 350 pounds...then yes...what you were, no..you were not "severely"

Nice try though.

I've found a reasonable substitute for Shreddies is Multi Grain Chex.

Yes, that's correct. I think Kathryn has a link to the data somewhere but, essentially, HFCS somehow triggers the brain into thinking the body is still hungry so you end up eating more than you require. In addition, it is much sweeter than regular sugar, so that's why everything tastes so sweet here. Blech.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is processed from hydrolyzed corn starch (so it’s not completely natural) and contains a high level of fructose (which is naturally occurring in fruits and honey) and a simple sugar carbohydrate, just like sucrose. It is about 75% sweeter than sucrose, less expensiv e than sugar, and mixes well in many foods. Food manufacturers (especially soda manufacturers) began using HFCS widely in the early 1970s to save money, and it was thought of as a revolutionary advance in food science because of its stability and usefullness in a variety of foods.

so why is High Fructose Corn Syrup being blamed? The problem appears to be the fructose not the corn syrup.

Corn syrup’s sugar is primarily glucose, which our body burns as a source of immediate energy, is stored in muscles and our liver for later use, and releases insulin.

Fructose, on the other hand, does not release or stimulate insulin. Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone that helps to metabolize our foods by pushing carbohydrates into our muscle cells to be used as energy, and allows carbohydrates to be stores in our liver for later use. It also stimulates production of another hormone, leptin, which helps to regulate our storage of body fat and increases our metabolism when needed. These two hormones keep our body fat regulated and tells us, for all intent purposes, when we are satisfied and sends the message to our brain to stop eating.

We say that a lot now 'wow that's so sweet'

We generally don't eat a lot of packaged food, but what about ketchup and salad dressing, as someone else mentioned - I mean those are just everyday things and you should be able to just grab some non-hfcs stuff at any supermarket!

I will start looking for those products, we just haven't ventured very far.
