Always had poutine and I lived no where near a french community.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

So speaking on the poutine thing, I just always figured it was more of a french thing rather then a Canadian thing. Maybe I'm wrong, but I have never had it before nor known anyone of my friends/family that has either. I remember seeing it more and more on the menus in fast food joints and restraunts in the past 10 or so years, but I just didn't know if it was popular outside the french communties.

Something about cheese curds, fries and whatever else is on it just seems like it would taste horrid. So has it alwyas been around outside of the french community? I just didn't remember it in the 80's at all...

You can get it anywhere, the best fast food place to get a poutine is Harveys, they use cheese curds and its not bad at all.

I'd have to say that A&W's poutine comes in a VERY close second to harveys.

Wow - I found yellow wax beans at Kroger's here in Stockbridge. I love yellow wax beans and haven't had them since I left Canada - I've looked for them too. These are also Kroger's own brand, so that is cool!

I saw them once at kroger here too. I was so happy I called my mom and told her she wouldnt have to bring my any more. She brought me up a case of em in June. But since I saw them at kroger that day I've never been able to find them again. But when I do I'm buying alot of em. TIll then I'm saving my cans from home.

Actually Harvey's was the fastfood place I was thinking of when I said I'm seeing it in the restraunts. I don't remember them having it years ago, just started noticing it there in the past couple of years on a visit. We had a New York Fries in the mall and don't recall it ever having it up until about 8 or so years ago. Myabe I am just unobservant and never noticed it...

I like the New York Fries poutine. And they've had it for a long long time. At least at the one in Fairview Mall anyhow near where I used to work.

I don't know where you are from in Canada warlord, but this is a relatively new phenomenon in Calgary anyway (with fast food places). The first time I ever tried poutine was at NY fries, like 2 years ago, I can't remember ever seeing it anywhere else (although I do see they have it at Harvey's now).

I had that once.

Now... my wife hates poutine and thinks it's disgusting. After eating what was delivered to me from New York Fries, I can see how and why her opinion formed. I'm sure there's better poutine somewhere else (just like better burgers than at McDonald's), but so far, the idea of mixing french fries with cheese that resembles chunky snot and covered in watery gravy doesn't appeal to me. :P

I absolutely loved poutine from the first time I tried it. When Mel was describing it to me before my first visit, she kept telling me how great it was and all I could think was "gravy? doesn't that go on turkey or biscuits?". The worst thing is finding cheese curds in Los Angeles. I called every Whole Foods Market in Los Angeles, and most of the Gelsons and found none. I called some cheese specialty stores in Beverly Hills, and they didn't even have it. Such failure by such a diverse city.....

I find that sometimes with poutine if the cheesecurds are too cold they don't melt enough for me. I like using shredded cheese for that reason, or I warm my cheesecurds a little bit before I put them on my fries. At a lot of fast food places in Canada, you could ask them to warm up your curds first! That was the BEST!

The New York fries Poutine, I always ask for it in a take out container and put the lid on it and let it steam up and melt for a few minutes (covering up the hole of course) Melted the cheese and it was Golden!
