The White House this morning said that they want to reach an agreement with Congress on a financial stimulus package within a few weeks.

"We're certainly talking weeks, not months," said White House press secretary Dana Perino.

...

Mrs. Perino said that Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson briefed the president by phone yesterday on the global economy, where markets around the world plummeted due to fears of a U.S. recession.</p>

Mr. Paulson is acting as the president's negotiator with Congress to hammer out a financial stimulus package to put cash in consumers' hands quickly. Such a deal could include tax rebates of up to $800 a person and $1,600 per family, according to media reports.

...

Mrs. Perino could not say how quickly money will actually funnel to taxpayers, but White House spokesman Tony Fratto said that they "are looking at ways to best deliver relief as quickly as possible."

Yay and $1,600 per family, according to media reports. Bush has done one good thing other than he is nothing but a fukhole. Think of it as an extra refund from your taxes they tax the chit out of your paychecks every week. :jest:

Does "per family" mean that I won't see a damn thing?

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

Maybe somewhat OT, but I have a question. If said stimulus package is approved, but it is after some have filed their taxes ( may want to file early to beat the rush) will the refund be held off until congressional approval, or will those people who file early just lose out?

I don't understand this at all. The government is going to print money, dole it out to its citizens and that somehow will stimulate economic growth? Talk about robbing Peter to pay Paul. Bizarre.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I hear ya and that's where my skepticism comes from....but at the end of the day, if they DO hand it out, I'm not gonna refuse it.

Well, refusing it would be somewhat cutting off the nose to spite the face. However, I fully expect to be 'paying' for this refund at some future time and I don't really expect that the economy will magically improve. Still, it's also true that many people will not do the sensible thing, and pay off some of their own credit card debt, but will spend it like it was a Christmas present so I guess someone will benefit for a while anyway.
