Most servers you come across probably don't work 10-12 hour days and have to carry 5 drinks in one hand without a tray or 7 SCORCHING plates on their outstretched arm and endure burn after burn on a daily basis. Trust me, they can't hack it.

Bullsh!t. My sister did, for three years during college.

And I happen to know a server at our local Friendly's. You just described her, too.

Melissa, these lies you seem to believe were created by illegal immigration apologists. American teenagers are capable of a lot more than you give them credit for.

If you don't believe me, check out the average age of the average U.S. soldier in Iraq. They are just a few years older than a high school kid, and they may have bad management ( ) but no one can say they're lazy and not willing to work hard.

Where were these people coming to apply for El Ranchero? Oh yeah they NEVER did! I know because I...was there! Where are the people at El Tampico, the Toro Bravo, Plaza Garibaldi, or any of the other 3 El Ranchero's. One American guy out of all of them lasted a month.

...the teenage kid from down the street couldn't (and doesn't want to) hack it.

Time for a little regional perspective, Melissa.

I live in the New Jersey 'burbs and it is my unscientific opinion that we don't have as many illegal immigrants out here as they do in, say, SoCal.

I eat out a lot. Most servers I ever run into have American accents. White, black..mostly. Some Latino. But almost all young and almost always with a clear, crisp, intelligible American accent. Most likely NOT someone who ran/swam/flew/crawled across the border a few years ago.

ALL of those kids qualify, in my mind, as the teenage kid down the street.

So don't tell me they can't hack it. I know they can. It's in regions where the labor market has been flooded with illegals that teenage American kids no longer participate in the market.

Personally, I don't think it the servers in the restaurants I go to here in SoCal that are illegals anyway. Most of the illegal hispanics are washing dishes or bussing tables, oddly for the Vietnamese restaurants. Even in the mexican restaurants I go to here, if the server is an illegal, she must be from Canada.

I'm so glad to have learned that our teenagers ain't worth ####### in the job market. Whenever I saw any of them work hard, I am sure they just did that for me to skew my opinion. Or maybe it was all an optical illusion to begin with.

Geez, there are hard working Americans of all ages out there. Millions of them.

I have worked with the teenagers who "work hard" in McD's and all those other lovely places teenagers like to work. Attitudes, "taking a 5" to smoke, sitting down, having friends come in to socialize...just a few of the offenses these hard working kids are guilty of.

I have never heard of El Ranchero. Why the hell would any teenager in my neck of the woods go to another state to work in a restaurant when there are plenty right here?

Point being..if he goes and sits down tonight at one of those "authentic" Mexican restaurants-not the chains, but the AUTHENTIC (so to speak) ones, the little appearing to be hole in the wall, one big room type of place, 9 times out of 10 his server will be illegal. And will probably show him a great time provide great service AND speak English.

You seem to confuse poor management with lazy staffs. You can make eager workers into lazy bums. ;)

Why is "Carrying hot plates up your arm" exclusive to these illegal Mexicans??

I waited tables to put myself through college...I carried plates, scorching oftentimes, up my arms and I have the burns to prove it...

why is it ONLY these people at el ranchero or whatever?

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

Ok.

So servers who work in chains aren't working hard? What about non-Mexican places? They don't work hard?

Why do you keep changing the parameters of the discussion? We were talking about servers. Now suddenly it has to be at a non-chain Mexican restaurant!

why is it ONLY these people at el ranchero or whatever?

Because that is all she knows.

No, Mexican restaurants hire white girls named Debbie too.

Because I have worked at 3 separate restaurants in my life, none of which carried plates on the arms. First because it was a safety risk-someone can get burned, second because it is a sanitation issue-your hair might potentially get in a person's plate if you carry them that high. I have tried myself to stack plates on my arms and I couldn't balance even one of the heavy things. I was even told in Memphis Bar-B-Q when I went to carry TWO plates-one in each hand-to get a tray.

Legal workers can sue. OSHA. It's a liability issue. Not a "lazy American" vs "hard workign Latino" issue.

Well you go there and see the faces of the people when a guy like Walter comes out with 7 plates stacked up his arm. You'd think they'd never seen anything like it. Shame that they saw it last week at Applebee's and must have missed it.
