The grapevine travels quickly with the tragic news. People are huddled together, hugging, crying and whispering. Melodee feels so alone and cold. She can feel the whispers and people pointing at her. A woman feels sympathy for her, and walks over to her.

Melodee: What happened? Why is everyone crying? What did I do?

Woman: Melodee, Shotta kill Frowzy. Im ead gwaan mad, and im kidnap Rasta’s gyal frum farrin. Fitz, Frowzy and Rasta go hafta im fe ketch har back, and im shot Frowzy inna im belly. Dem sey Rasta try fe stomp im life outta im. Shotta inna critical condition in St. Ann. Dem ago tek im tuh Bellevue when im stabilize. Yuh nuh fe recognize im same wey. Yuh man face mash hup mash hup.

Melodee: Wha-whaa? When? Why dem nuh call mi? Oh Gawd. Frowzy ded? NO! Nuh sar. Mi nuh believe dem tings. Whe Fitz and Tradee?

Woman: Dem dere yere. Nuff commotion ah gwaan inna front yaad. Yuh neva ear hall de screaming did gwaan?

Melodee: Please Gawd nuh. Nuh mi Shotta. Nuh mi Shotta. Dem cyan tek im frum mi.

Melodee looks in her clutch, and realizes that she still has the keys to the Navigator. Without hesitation, she runs along the side of the house, then jumps into the truck. Melodee turns the ignition and begins maneuvering the big truck out of its tight parking space. Ian runs up beside her, and motions for her to unlock the door. Melodee cracks the window on his side.

Melodee: Ian, I have to go to the hospital now. I don’t have time to argue with you or explain. If you are going to give me a hard time about it, I will run you’re a** over. Move out of the way Ian. I’ll be back for you soon.

Ian: Wait. You can’t just leave me here. I don’t know anyone here. Besides, it’s my rental. Let me in Melodee. Why are you chasing after a man that killed someone for another woman? He doesn’t want you, can’t you see that?

Melodee: MOVE! Lata.

Melodee shifts the truck into drive, and pulls off at full speed. Ian attempts to hang on by gripping the frame and standing on the running board. Halfway up the driveway, he falls off. Melodee doesn’t look back. Ian hobbles back down the driveway, brushing dirt and rocks from his torn Ralph Lauren suit.

Ian: PHOCK! This is some bullsh**! PHOCK! PHOCK! PHOCK!

Ian: Hold on. Wait a minute. I want to be here for you Toya. I swear, I am on the up and up. I would never try to take advantage of such a devastating tragedy. Whether you believe it or not, I grew close to Frowzy. I wouldn’t have been here at all if he hadn’t befriended me. He was a good man.

Toya: Rasta! Please make him leave! Get him away from me and my family! I don’t want you here. I don’t want you here. You tried to ruin my wedding. LEAVVEEE!!! MY GOD…please leave.

Tradee: I’m here sis. I’m here. Mya get Toya out of here. I’ll deal with Ian. Toya honey go check on your husband. He is asking for you inside.

Ian: Ha! You will deal with me? What like you dealt with your own brother? Are you going to kick my teeth in, crush my nose and rearrange my eyes too? What? You are all like a bunch of country inbreeds! Everyone phocking and sucking each other. How often do you all share women anyway?

Tradee slams his fist into Ian’s face with a nasty right hook. He backs it up with a solid jab to his flaccid stomach. Ian drops to the ground on one knee. He palms a handful of loose dirt, then he flings it into Tradee’s eyes. Ian plants a stiff knee into Tradee’s groin. Tradee tries to clear his eyes, and he doubles over in pain. Ian attempts to kick Tradee in his face, but Tradee grabs his foot. Tradee twists Ian’s foot, and the ankle immediately snaps. Tradee holds Ian by the collar and draws his fist back to pummel Ian’s face, but stops when he feels Mya tug on his arm.

Mya: No Travis. No. No more violence. There has been too much violence today for our entire lifetime. This was supposed to be a day of happiness and joy. A day for us to unite families, and enjoy each other. I will be damn if I loose you to jail or a bullet! NO DAMNIT!

Ian you have to leave, and you need to leave now. I will call you a taxi, or you can walk. It’s your choice. Please do not come looking for us again, or I will let my man finish the job.

Woman: I can take you to the hospital sir. Are you ready?

Ian: Yeah…yeah. Let me get out of here before you have two funerals and a wedding.

Tradee: Mek mi chop yuh rass! Trust me Babylon nuh find hall yuh body pawts fe de next thirty years dung yereso! Move hout eediat bwoy!

Ian attempts to walk, but falls over on his face. His foot hangs limply behind him. The adrenaline from the fight has left his body, and Ian cries out in pain and terror.

Ian: You will be in jail before nightfall. I have tons of witness, and I will sue you for everything you have, including your first born.

Mya: Nobody saw anyting here, except you falling off the speeding Navigator sir. I hope that it’s not broken. I heard that ankle breaks can be the nastiest bone to break. Maybe, you won’t need a cane for more than a couple of years.

Come on baby. Let’s go inside with our family.

Ian: Didn’t you see what he did to me ma’am?

Woman: I only saw you fall off the red Navigator sar. I can take you to the hospital, but I won’t go inside with you.

Ian: PHOCK! Can somebody help me get to the car at least?

The crowd shakes their heads in the negative, and slowly turn their backs to walk to their own cars. Mya and Tradee walk slowly back into the house, with Mya inspecting Tradee’s hands for any bruising or cuts. Mya and Tradee clean up the house, and they drive Toya’s parents to their hotel. Then, they come back to stay with Fitz and Toya at their house. When the house is completely quiet, Mya breaks down.

Mya: *Crying softly* Frowzy lost his life for me. I am the reason for all of this mess. Why did your brother flip out like that? Why did this all happen? Why did Fitz have to loose his brother on the same day he gained a wife? I thought I would never see you again Travis. I prayed that you came to rescue me. But, maybe I should have just tried to get away by myself. Frowzy would still be here if it weren’t for me.

Tradee: Mya babes. Hush puttus. It wasn’t your fault. I should have taken my brother’s actions earlier more seriously. Maybe, I should have taken the time to talk everything out with him. The guy that killed Frowzy today, was not the brother I grew up with. I always thought I was more physical than Delmar. I didn’t even know he owned a gun. I underestimated him and his rage. I am solely responsible for what happened today. No more tears Mya baby, come here. I just want to hold you until I wake up from this nightmare.

Toya lies down in the bed with Fitz. He sleeps fitfully, occasionally screaming out from his nightmarish memories. Toya holds him tighter, and she wraps her body around his in an effort to get closer to him.

Toya: I love you Fitzroy. I love you so much. If I could do anything to take away your pain, I wouldn’t hesitate. I love you baby. I love you.

Fitz wakes up in the middle of the night. He searches for Toya’s face in the darkness. Fitz waits until his eyes adjust to the darkness before he speaks.

Fitz: Toya. Toya baby. Are you awake?

Toya: I’m here honey. What’s wrong? What do you need? I’ll get it. Whatever it is.

Fitz: Don’t turn on the light. Please. Baby, I miss my brother. I miss him bad. But, he wouldn’t want me to waste away either. My brother loved life. He loved the fast pace nightlife, smoking herb, drinking, partying and women. We were different and alike in so many ways. Toya, I didn’t think my heart could hurt this much. It was bad when I lost my ex-wife, Jr.’s mother, but to loose a sibling. My only brother. Damn.

I wanted your day…our day to be so special. Instead, it turned into a nightmare. I’ve asked myself over and over would I have done it differently. You know what? The answer is no. Frowzy wouldn’t have either. We would have both still made the choice to find Mya. Baby, Delmar was so far gone, he didn’t even realize that he had taken a life. He was still crying out to Mya, even with his face crushed. I wanted to pick up that gun and take his life, I swear. But, Frowzy wouldn’t let me go. He told me to just hold him. I begged him to take me with him, then I remember you and Jr. I wanted Tradee to take his own brother’s life for my brother’s. Does that make me an animal?

Toya: Oh baby. I wish I could take away the hurt. You are never going to be an animal. Your reaction was natural. None of us knew that Delmar would loose his mind so completely and so quickly. I can’t take any of it back, or make you feel any better about losing your brother. But, I won’t stop loving you. I’m here forever Fitzroy.

Fitz: I need you Toya. I need you tonight. I need you every night. I need you to hold me and engulf me in your warmth. I want to stay buried in your womb. You are my drug of choice Toya.
