Besides the physiological effects alluded to in this study, caffeine is a suspected DNA mutagen, acting as a substitute base for Uracil, thereby 'nicking' the DNA strand into fragmentation. This may be one factor behind caffeine addicts constant shakes beyond the ebb and tide of muscle movements associated with a caffeine rush.

eeek! :o

Don't worry man!! You can still enjoy decaf...

As for me, I'll continue loving my very infrequent cup of joe. That way the desired effect of the caffeine is expected to be sensitive, not saturating.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

What about Ginseng?

I think Ginseng has another effect... I'd still be careful even though the literature mentions antioxidants as a major byproduct of ingesting Ginseng...

There is also research linking smaller amounts of caffeine with beneficial health, but then again, pregnancy is a process only half of the human species goes through. All compounds consumed should be carefully planned out to maximize benefits and minimize detriment.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Chocolate does have caffeine in it and should be avoided during pregnancy but should also be avoided during breastfeeding as well. Some children are allergic to something in chocolate and can actually get a rash from drinking the breastmilk after the mom has had chocolate (my brother did). I certainly wouldn't have known that if my mom hadn't told me, and I've only heard it before from here, but thought it might be a tidbit useful for this thread! :)

Gosh I'd put up with a chocolate allergy instead of giving it up.

Well, my mother is a chocolate addict but the health of her babies came before her chocolate cravings. The last thing you'd want to do to an infant is put them at risk for an allergic reaction!
