I saw it this morning. Thought it was ok - bit of a gimmick.

However given the context of recent history in NYC - seeing people running from clouds of dust amid collapsing buildings

(caused by a giant squid monster)

didn't really sit right with me. Seemed a little cheap IMO.

That and for all the "realistic" style - some of the stuff that happened to the characters seemed rather implausible. Not least - that the handycam or whatever it was seemed to be indestructible.

Right? And no battery ran out!

---

I have many questions I wish got answered. And it was too similar to I Am Legend (NYC armageddon) - they should've spread that shiz out.

The 9/11 reference in the beginning made me all anxious. I was thinking oh god, please do not let this be all like this. Thank god it wasn't but boy did they play that up.

I'm just going to lay out my Qs, no spoiler tags.

-----

What was it - alien or man made?

Did it come from the tanker crash or did the tanker crash upset the ocean & it came out?

Were the little things parasites or what? (They didn't look like it so I'm guessing it was parasites)

Didn't it look too much like Alien?

How on earth was it able to grab the helicopter from so far below? and then - why wasn't the helicopter flying higher?

No way they could've survived that heli crash. Similarly, no way that girl would've survived the impalement in her apt.

They walked (too) hella far in 6 hours to be realistic.

I think they borrowed it from Lovecraft (basically any big fictional tentacled monsters owes a lot to Lovecraft), although they didn't say it. In which case - its been under the sea for a million plus years.

No coincidence that the guy was going to Japan for his new job... Incidentally Japanese movies of the 50's and 60's (i.e. Godzilla) were heavily influenced by the fallout (not the radioactive kind) of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings - a lot of their anime still is. The atomic bombings of Japan, on top of hte country being destroyed by conventional war, and then "culturally destroyed" by the allied occupation in the subsequent years.

I'm not sure it works for us the same way doing that kind of thing about the post 9/11 world.

That initial party scene truly gave me a headache. Hubby & I had to close our eyes for a bit.

Overall, I was entertained the entire time. But too many story holes for me to truly enjoy it, in retrospect. Hubby said, What story?

Yeah I wouldn't watch it again.

Though I did have to laugh that they had to put signs out at the ticket desk about "possible motion sickness". I guess someone vomited during The Blair Witch project and then got a payout.

Damn, really?

I was OK with most of it except that party.

Blair Witch Project was better IMO. This is pretty much the same, but with digital effects; and in this movie you see the "monster", something that was only implied in the TBWP. Probably also because TBWP film-makers had an effects budget that amounted to a handful of change and pocket lint.

Saw this over the weekend as well. I thought it was alright but wouldn't watch it again. I had a lot of the same questions you all had. There was just too many holes in the "story" to make it enjoyable overall. Everyone left the theater murmuring "what the hell was that thing anyways? What kind of ending was that? Didn't explain a thing!"

I liked the way it was filmed...it was something different and fresh from other movies I have seen recently. There were some scenes where I closed my eyes just to get a quick break. We died laughing when we saw those warning signs..."May cause motions sickness similar to that of riding a roller coaster. Please view at your own risk."

I want to know what kind of camera that was! Indestructible with such clarity and long battery life

whoa!!! that is an old film

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
