Not quite sure what section to put this in but I figured those married to an American may have encounted this before.

I'm currently in the UK,my wife in the US. For tax purposes she needs a notarized copy of my passport, but it has to be Scrivener Notary. Has anyone done this? I've had little luck in finding someone outside of London and the cost of £60 seems crazy to me. Any advice?

I have not had to notarize anything for the IRS, but I did have to use a notary for signing closing documents on a house in the US. I had to go back and forth with the lender and title company, but they finally relented and said I could use any UK notary as long as their forms were translated into English. (huh???) Anyway, they had told me at first I had to use the US consulate notary, but that turned out to be wrong. I had to explain to them that in the UK, general notaries are solicitors who have been granted notary powers - unlike in the US where nearly anyone can be a notary. They ended up accepting that & we paid £40 for 5 signatures to be notarized here in Berkshire. Double check and make sure that you need a Scrivener.

If indeed you do need a Scrivener Notary, I'm afraid you will have to go to London & pay whatever they are asking. According to the Scrivener website, there's only 27 Scrivener Notaries in England and they can only practice within a 3-mile radius of the city of London.

Wikipedia:

"In England there are three classes of notaries. Scrivener notaries, who get their name from the Scriveners' Company, are the only notaries permitted to practise in the City of London. Due to their geographical proximity to many civil law countries, scrivener notaries are only appointed after five years' articles to a practising notary. Scrivener notaries must be fluent in one or two foreign languages and be familiar with the principles and practice of foreign law."

I did the same but here in Canada. I went to the Montreal US consulate. And yes, it is under "American Citizen Services". You have to fill out a W-7. The US notary photocopied my passport and put a special stamp and signature on the photocopy, then attached it to the W-7.

But if they tell you that you have to go to a Scrivener notary, then you should do that.
