Wow, I really needed that laugh today! Glad to hear you are safe and back in the states Jess, hope to meet up with you in the spring! Maybe if I had read vj first I would have known you were here already. Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary, Happy Day to everyone in vj land, Jackie, congratulations on the hatching. I"m in the middle of watching Pearl Harbor for like the 4th time and I have a question that has bugged me each time I watch it.............................................at one point when one of the ships is sinking you hear the sailors shouting, "I can't swim!!! I can't swim!!!!"

You don't have to know how to swim to be in the Navy?

Happy Sunday!

I am happy to announce the arrival of spawn. Mr & Mrs Snowfish (Snowball and Snowman) welcomed their babies to the aquarium world they live in. Not quiet sure how many there are, but hope to get a more accurate count when I get home from work. One of the little guys has his fathers eyes. :blush:

Is it a requirement if you're going to be stationed on a navy vessel to know how to swim? Seriously...it should be! This isn't rocket science!!!!! And these guys were only a few feet from the dock so they weren't in the middle of the Atlantic. Of course it made it difficult to get to the docks what with all the missiles and bullets flyin' everywhich way but to say "help I can't swim" isn't a thing I'd expect to hear. I"d expect "oh sh!t this sucks" or something but not I can't swim.

previous answer was taken from talks with my dad, back in the 50's and 60's it was not a requirement.

just checked with a guy here, their "swimming" requirement is being able to thrash from one end of a pool to another. and also float for 45 seconds. not much of a requirement overall, it sounds just like the army's "drownproofing" classes i had to endure. the guy i asked was in the navy and his comment was it was not anything that required any skill to pass....
