Never felt the need to hide it. In fact, once the relationship was established, I was so happy I told everyone I knew, including people I'd just met :P

I sure didn't hide my relationship but I am sure my family thought I was crazy specially after I told them I was going to fly down to meet him all by myself....

Oh, my mother was pretty sure he was an internet stalker and I was going to end up in a dumpster somewhere.

My mother did that when I met one of my boyfriends off the internet back 8 years ago or so. She told me how stupid it was, blah, blah, blah. Then when I came back alive and reporting the meeting as a success, she suddenly changed her tune and within 3 months, met her first boyfriend off the internet.

Neither of my parents knew we met on the internet (his dad had lived in NY so I crafted a story) .... my dad is convinced everyone is an internet stalker and I'm pretty sure he would have c*ckblocked me. (Okay, I'm female, but still!) My dad is totally nuts and would have locked me up in his basement if he thought I was going to meet an internet stalker. (I was 18? when we met)

Dad still hasn't found out he got his green card through me. He's an ultra-conservative Republican who is convinced everyone from South America/Mexico/Central America is a scammer looking for a way in. I'm not PROUD of lying to my dad, but it was done mainly so I didn't have to listen to a mean, rude, racist, ignorant diatribe.

Apparently my mother didn't want to hear it either...as my dad doesn't know she's M's joint sponsor. :o Everyone else knows about M and I, and knew about us, it's just kind of an unspoken rule that we don't discuss it around my father.

I have only once heard the last of your sample criticisms. (and it came from my former wife, so I only consider the source) Everyone I know and talk too, thinks it is cool. Hell, even two people started up their own long distance relationships. I would never hide my relationship from anyone. Don't like it? I really don't care.

hehehe my parents were kinda the same way -- very leery of people I talked to on the net. Once they started meeting a couple of the guys in person, they realized that not all people in internet chatrooms are crazies. ;) One of them actually knew mutual friends of ours, and that clinched it. The moment I knew that my mom was comfortable with it was when we were doing the dishes one night and she casually asked "so, been talking to anyone interesting lately online? " I had to laugh, my mom isn't known for subtlety!

The only person that expressed concern was a friend of mine who told me to move back to Canada as soon as possible because it was safer.

I don't care at all what other people may think or say. We're not living for them. And our future will have nothing to do with them. There's currently a 70+% divorce rate among Americans. Let them worry about their own problems. Chances are they are in a bad "local" marriage anyway.

22 Jun 05 - We met in a tiny bar in Williamsburg, Va. (spent all summer together)

27 May 06 - Sasha comes back for a 2nd glorious summer (spent 8 months apart)

70+%, eh?

Plus or minus 25%, I guess. And it's safe to say that divorce stats don't jump over 25% in five years.

Actually, they seem to be falling.

I'm all for people not attacking me for my choices, but I'm not goin to attack them for their's either.

Have u ever hid your relationship w/ a foreigner to avoid criticism? Some people would rather keep their relationship w/ a foreigner to themselves so that they don't have to hear unwanted comments such as:

Long distance relationships don't last.

Why couldn't u just find love in your own country?

Are u sure they're not only after you for a green card?

I have.. I knew I'd get criticism for it so I kept putting it off.. I don't consider them "criticisms" though. They are legitimate concerns! Eventually, the concerned parties and I were able to talk through things.

I'm assuming you are in this situation (hiding your relationship). I suggest you start telling people now so you have more time to demonstrate the validity of your pursuit. Not all of the discussions will be easy, but it's for the best. Good luck to you.

My parents were that same way too!! And it's not unfounded.... My sister had a short, umm, experience, with some guy she met online. She drove two states away to meet this guy, disregarding family opposition, and let's just say he didn't turn out to be the person she thought he was...

One of the reasons why I was hesitant to tell them about my "online" girlfriend...
