yanno, no matter how long I'm here in the US, I will never never ever ever get used to (or like :P ) paying for health care services! I had to have an ultrasound a couple weeks ago, and my stupid crappy health insurance rejected the claim. So, here's a $436 bill that I don't have the money to pay for. And I have to go for a follow-up ultrasound next month. I think I may have to cancel the appointment. :(

I wanna go hoooooooooome! :(

Well... as much as I hate healthcare providers (and I really do; they're a bunch of cheapskate bastards), the problem with this complaint is that an ultrasound isn't a necessary thing. You've elected to do it when you're life isn't in danger. So your health insurance feels they don't need to pick up the tab.

From my wife has told me, Canadian healthcare works similarly too. When she had foot surgery, provincial healthcare didn't pay for it since they felt it was "elective" and wasn't necessary to her health. So I fail to see how it's really all that different in Canada than in the U.S.

The difference is that ultrasounds are standard diagnostic tools which are fully covered under provincial healthcare. Canadians do not need to be at death's door in order to receive "unnecessary" diagnostics. And I can guarantee you that your wife did not pay the entire medical bill for her elective surgery. Provincial healthcare would have covered her expenses to a certain point. Anything beyond that is billable to the patient, which is recovered under work healthplans if she is employed by a typical company. Unless, of course, her surgery was purely for cosmetic reasons.

Um... actually, no. Her surgery wasn't covered at all. I think I'd know a little more about this than you, considering I've been told this story a million times over. She had foot surgery to remove a bunion. None of it was covered under provincial healthcare, since it was considered "elective." She had to pay for it entirely herself.

She's still quite annoyed at the fact that Alberta Healthcare would consider something like that "elective" when she needed to get it done in order to easily walk and forced her to pay. But that was the deal. Fortunately, she had the funds. Otherwise, she would've had some problems.

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Now of course by saying something like that you are just asking for trouble. Besides - who are you to spoil the fun of those who like to take a more serious view on life? I mean come on - you can't just come in here trying to have fun all the time like there isn't important stuff going on outside your own little bubble. OMG it's like you're messing wif my LIFE.

Jeraly, I have asked you MANY TIMES to please just use this thread to add useful comments instead of trying to show how clever you are; I am sure there will be people reading this later on who will be looking for useful information rather than attempts of witty banter, but do you listen? no you do not... I think it might be time to bring in the mods, and perhaps Captain Ewok, and maybe even God, to adjudicate on this matter

"Um.... no", actually you are the one who is completely misinformed. The majority of your wife's surgery would have been covered by Provincial healthcare and the remainder.... for specialist fees.... would have been billable to herself..... the costs of which she can recover from submitting an expense claim through her employee health plan, should she have one.

DP, you have absolutely no claim on knowing something more than I do. I have, in fact, had elective bunion surgery. I know exactly what I am talking about. I will say this and then I will say no more about it..... you are making yourself look like a fool when you talk about things which you have not bothered to educate yourself on. Your wife is obviously uninformed/misinformed and you are regurgitating hearsay which is completely erroneous. Either that, or you are misunderstanding what she is telling you. Every single Canadian on this board knows that. You may want to stop embarrassing yourself.

OMGWTFBBQ??!!!!!??!?!!!1111!!1!1? How dare you even insinuate that I am not funny - I notice that you conveniently ignore the fact that you are messin wif my LIFE - you obviously don't have the intelligence or wit to address this very important issue. As for people wanting to look this thread up in future - I am sure they will but they will come to realise that not all people are helpful here. And yes - I hope you get smited as well :P

On another note - am listening to "Down Under" by Men at Work and it reminds me of you :luv:

Well... as much as I hate healthcare providers (and I really do; they're a bunch of cheapskate bastards), the problem with this complaint is that an ultrasound isn't a necessary thing. You've elected to do it when you're life isn't in danger. So your health insurance feels they don't need to pick up the tab.

Actually I didn't choose to have the ultrasound, my doctor sent me to have it to diagnose a rather large ovarian cyst. And I'd like to see you say it is not a necessary diagnostic tool if heaven forbid your wife were to ever get a similar cyst, because let me tell you, they're bloody painful! And an ultrasound for the exact same thing would be fully covered by Canadian healthcare plans. Up to 4 per year actually in Ontario. No idea of other provinces, I've only ever lived in Ontario. And every province is different in what is covered and what is not.

And, as any ovarian cyst well be cancerous, my life could be in danger, so yes, it is a necessary diagnostic tool. Spank you berry fudge for your contribution.
