Hi all

I'm a vegetarian and found some things labeled as vegetables rather unedible.

Where do you like to eat? What do you eat?

Maybe we could exchange recipes and tips on where to get fresh food and gooooood veggies.

Not a veggie plate with bacon in the green beans.

oh yeah, what makes it harder for me is living in Oklahoma. Veggies means green beans, corn and okra

I never realized how hard it can be to be a vegetarian around here until I dated this Indian woman a few years back who happened to be vegetarian. And I mean vegetarian - not the fish eating kind.

It's a challenge for sure if you want to go and eat out. But as far as home-cooking is concerned, she cooked up a load of good stuff. No. Great stuff. Really. Hell, I could have gone vegetarian on her diet. The stuff she cooked up was absolutely delicious.

That said, you might want to find yourself some Indian folks if you want to exchange good vegetarian recipes. They even make okra, corn and green beans taste great.

I'm the USC and I've been a vegetarian for about 10 years. I live near Boston and I've always found that I can find more veggie options in the city rather then the suburbs. There are a couple vegetarian restaurants - always Chinese or Indian. I can usually find something to eat at pizza and Italian places as well. Steak places occassionally have vegetarian dishes, but seafood places almost never do.

I usually make most of my own foods, usually not from real recipies though, I usually just get out a bunch of veggies, sauces and tofu and mix something up - whatever looked good in the store that week! Good luck finding more options.

While I'm not strictly vegetarian, one of my children is actually a strict vegetarian (and she even goes through "fits" of vegamism  ) Therefore, I tend to stick to cooking veg. at home. I find it's very difficult to find HER a well rounded meal in most restaurants. Indian, Chinese, Thai, and even Subway are the ways to go if you're vegan. After attempting the vegan way of eating I realize that vegetarianism is not difficult at all at home or in restaurants. I have several great vegetarian recipes. If you're interested I could post them or PM me. There was an veg recipes thread on the old VJ board that I searched for without any luck.

I've been a strict lacto-ovo vegetarian for about 4 years! Yay for vegetarians!

That said, I live in Central Florida, the cow-capital of the world. It can be very difficult for me to go out to eat and find good vegetarian options.

My secret? Order from the side-dish part of the menu! I get side orders of steamed veggies, fried onions, mashed potatoes or a baked potato, seasoned black beans, veggie rice, salad, veggie soup, all kinds of stuff on one big plate, and I usually eat for way less than my meat-eating family and friends. I do this in big chain restuarants when we go out. If we go to a small diner, I just ask the waitress or the cook to make me something special. They usually don't mind at all!

My other secret is simply not going out to eat at big chain restaurants. :P I love ethnic food! Chinese, mexican, indian, mediterranean, and especially italian restaurants are the most accomodating when it comes to offering vegetarian options. And if they don't have what you want, just ask them. In my experience, they seem to like coming up with something yummy that you can eat. :)

Mmmm...I'm hungry now. :D

Oh, I agree with you! It's really a hassle to go out to eat.

Usually we end up in The Olive Garden. They have some tasty vegetarian stuff.

Also Chipotle's have vegetarian burritos and tacos. At Taco Bell, I get the quesidilla without any meat (so just cheese :P). Subway has a veggie sandwich. McDonalds, erm BLECH to them. (I get the fruit and walnut salad if hubby decides to stop by there for his double cheeseburgers without ketchup :P)

I'd think nice restaurants would make better choices than fast food or chains...

That said, when my mother-in-law, who is a veggie, was visiting last summer, we found loads of strictly vegetarian places and many with vegetarian options.

I imagine vegetarian food is hard to come by on Oklahoma, unless you stick to salads which you can order without meat and bacon (same thing but I'd emphasize that). Best thing to do is to stay away from small local restaurants and as suggested, go Asian or Mediterranean when you go out to eat.

Also, I've noticed that there's quite a bunch of canned food in the US that contains meat, like beans etc. I usually make sure to read all the labels on anything to make sure that it's lard-, meat-, and gelantine free.

Good luck!
