"Name Checks"

Hi, gang.. Just curious..

Does anyone know the difference between the name checks for Adjustment of Status and the name checks done as part of the K-1 process? (I'm assuming the K-1 process name checks check both parties.)

It seems that the name-check step happens for both AoS and K-1's, but only the AoS one seems to hold people up a lot.

not sure but when i went for my biometrics for AOS they told me I already had them done and was cleared.

I dont know if anyone has a difinitive answer to this, but the checks that were ordered on my husband were Visa Mantis, Visa Condor, SAO based on TAL - the list goes on for other countries and other criteria (Eagle, donkey, bear, etc etc). However these terms are not used when describing FBI namecheck. In our case, if there WERE the same, then we are going through it all over again. That would not explain those who had lengthy waits for the visa and flew through AOS though.

ETA: the reason you do not see as many "stuck" during the visa phase (although it does happen) is because most countries only require police reports for the purpose of clearing someone. The namecheck for AOS is the real deal.

Lal, what are all those "animals"? I have never heard of those name checks before. Are they all looking for something different?

Hmm - I'm wondering the same thing! The only thing I can think of is that the Canadian checks are run by the RCMP in Canada but these ones are run by something different... although I'm not sure exactly what. Plus once you get to the AOS status, lots of name changes have been made, usually by the women! I hope I don't get stuck in name check for changing my name lol. But then my new name is not too common... (I don't know if those are the reasons either, those are just possible guesses!)

Kind of - some are based on country, some are based on educational training, most I never bothered to look at, but you can google them, they are all talked about and have documentation of the workflow and the when they would be ordered.

They are more referred to as "security clearances" and not as namechecks though. This was part of the distinction I was trying to make in my other post however I see now that I failed to mention those "animal" checks were ordered by Montreal during our K1, not here stateside. I have no idea if they call them something else other than FBI namecheck stateside. Anything is possible, but USCIS themselves as well as elected officials refer to this process stateside as FBI namecheck.

Thanks for the article. It was rather interesting. I'm kind of scared that they're going to look more closely at me than at some people because my co-sponsor is in the military. Not that I have anything to hide; it's just that I hate people getting all up in my business. Can't wait til I'm a citizen and done with this #######.

Any reason why you think this would cause scrutiny? Joint sponsors have nothing to do with namechecks.

Nope. No reason at all. Hence the fact that I said, "Not that I have anything to hide. I just hate people getting all up in my business". My co-sponsor is my co-sponsor. He's not sharing secrets with me to sell to Canada. Which is all that I thought they would think about me.
