One-way vs. Round Trip

Hey all!

I am sure this has been covered somewhere before, but after searching the archives I couldn't find what I was looking for, soooo.....

Is it OK for the K1 fiance to come to the US on a round-trip ticket? After checking ticket prices, it seems like a one-way ticket is roughly $1,000 more expensive than a round-trip. While that sounds like pure and utter crazy talk, that is that the internets is telling me.

I can usually find a nice cheap flight back using Air China....provided the plane actually reaches its destination.... but I don't want to cause any hastles at immigration if she walks in with a return flight ready in hand.

Is it cool?

Thanks!

Good question, I'm not sure.... but there is definitely nothing saying you HAVE to take that return trip. I was going to have my fiance do the same thing when he comes here in order to save the money on the one-way ticket. I'm also curious to see if anyone knows.

Jennifer :)

Yeah, it would be just an empty seat heading back to Japan. I don't mind that, if it saves us a bundle of cash!

Well, airlines usually compensate for that by overbooking, plus people wait on stand-by knowing that not everyone who is booked on a flight is going to show up. They manage to fill the seats anyway! If we don't get an answer from someone here who knows I can write my lawyer and ask her because now I'm curious!

Lots of people have used a round-trip ticket for a K-1 without issue.

One tidbit of advice, though: Make sure the return trip is at least 90 days from your arrival. Otherwise, they might stamp your I-94 to expire on the date of the return trip instead of the full 90 days.

Have fun!!

Round trip is fine, as long as you use the outbound leg.

What do you mean? Of course, we would have no intention of ever using the return ticket....

And thanks for the advice Jesse G! Will be sure to do that.

Right, some people have tried to get a round trip ticket originating in the US, and then using the return. That doesn't work, since the return would be canceled if the outbound leg is not used.

i will just share my knowledge as far as i know..for me, i tried to researched before online, and the roundtrip is cheaper than a oneway and some of the websites one way is very expesive than rt and some just the same price. From phil last october 2007 i searched my ticket will be $1, 800 but i tried to do alternative since i have so many friends in the travel industry i ask favor if they can find a ticket for me.

I think u have to visit a travel agency in your area coz airlines also and travel agency they have agreement some travel agencies that is accredited on the airline their ticket is cheaper compared to the airline prices. Try to differentiate their prices and the online prices dont deal fast coz travel agents is their for you to quote they can look for a flight for you and do initial booking and they will just give you an option date when to pay it so no worries if u dont like it so dont pay it..

You have to tell also that its your first time to come in the US coz they might lower the price coz still ur from japan not a greencard holder yet that is what i remembered to my classmate who prepared my plane ticket.

Hope it helps

As Key mentioned try talking to a travel agent. The internet only displays prearranged flights and fares and they'll often post 1-way international as being more expensive than roundtrip. This is usually because the airlines offer discounts for the roundtrip. A good agent can usually work through the system and find a comparable 1-way price. If not, then go with the roundtrip; if they ask at immigration just explain that the roundtrip portion is going to go unused...or else schedule the return flight for distant future so there's a chance you might be able to use it once the green card is approved.

The prices change day to day, sometimes hour to hour. The best thing to do is just alot of pricing both one-way and round trip. Lira flew here on a round trip ticket because it was cheaper (at that time). :)
