Poiteen, sorry about the fire. I also hope they have good insurance. they are going to need it!

ha, but other morons have told me other things, blah blah blah. Why oh why must they question the superior knowledge of the founder of the Peanut Gallery Posse?

just a general note re the JFK query that they were announcing at LA that it is 'US policy' that all bags be picked up and re-checked at your FIRST arrival destination, even if they've been booked through to a final destination... not saying I'm sure, just saying that's what they were saying ;)

yay maven! well done! :D

going off to read linked thread

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Egads! Picking it up and rechecking it? Hmmmm. I will certainly attempt to clarify that before booking. Thanks for the heads up

StP is right. You'll only go through Immigration at Shannon, not customs as well. In order to clear customs at your POE you have to have your bags with you, which is why you'll need to collect them and re-check them. Bit of a PITA!

I knew I wasn't doing customs till actually in the USA, but I was thinking that I would do it at my final destination.

The Aer Lingus website, that if you have an onward flight booked with airlines they have a baggage agreement with, they check it through. StP, do you know if this was a new thing?

they were making it sound like it was, but it was the same deal - and same wording - that I encountered when I went to the US last time, which was November 06 ;)

it may not be a big deal... when we landed in LA, the baggage belts were about seventeen steps from the immigration desks; you could SEE the bags going round while you were waiting in line ;)

Your bags will be tagged through to your final destination but you will pick them up at JFK, take them physically through customs and then put them right back on a conveyer belt on the other side where the airline will (hopefully) put them on your onward flight. Should be pretty painless.

That was the case when I last went through JFK, though I had come from London and Dublin and had to clear immigration first.

 3 hours sounds OK but if anything is delayed - it will suck.

The thing is, that you will have it checked through but you will still have to go through the customs with it and then give it to the guys that stand next to the "transfer belt". Then they transfer it onto the flight for you and therefore you don´t have to go check it in again or something like that :) But it´s a pretty fast procedure, especially if you aren´t standing in looong immigration lines :) So it shouldn´t delay you too much :)
