Florida recently changed th rules so that they will now take the NOA for AOS. We went back to the office and almost made it through until the name on Lucero's Social security account did not match her married name. That was a show stopper. It took us about 2 hours of waiting to find this out.

I we had this all to do over again I think we would have just let Lucero keep her maiden name. Everything would have been much easier if we weren't trying to change the name.

This will all get much worse when the realid act actually goes into effect.

There is a new federal law (REAL ID Act), that imposes on all the states the requirement to veriify legal status here in order to issue a drivers license. An expired I94 will not work. You will need a EAD to show legal presence. Even then, they will only issue a license for the validity of the EAD.

Any state that doesnt comply, then their license cannot be used for a Federal purpose, including boarding an aircraft.

/nod though the act doesn't take effect until 3 years after it was passed...so though it's on the books, it's not dictating current policy. That said, certainly it doesn't mean that individual states aren't changing their internal policies in the mean time to prepare for the time where such policies will be federally mandated. Your mileage may vary depending on what state you live in.

Yes, they have three years to comply with all the provisions, such as uniform readability of a magnetic strip, compatible databases with on-line access, etc., but I think that most states are already compying with the other provisions including needing a SSN and showing legal presence here in the US.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

My husband just passed his driver's license in Ohio this past Saturday. He had taken the written portion to get his learner's permit in January. They wanted his passport and our notice for filing for AOS. Saturday he went and took the road test and manuverability part and they just asked for his social security card again and the same other papers but we now had his green card, so it was no problem. We really didn't have much of a problem except kept getting different answers to what we needed to take for taking the written part. I just called a few times and took everything they asked for. We would have had a problem if I had gone by the first telephone call. It's a shame sometimes you can't get the right answers the first time. Good Luck!

Colorado also won't issue a driver's license or state ID without an EAD or Green card (if the I94 has expired or is close to expiring.) They are very ####### about it - I talked to some of the people in charge but they can't see it beyond what their rules are! However, some others (in different states) have had luck by just providing their NOA (Colorado didn't accept that.) Good Luck

Florida was okay with the NOA1 for AOS (EAD, I94, passport were no good). In any case, they use different rules than the ones posted on their web site. (they had a book with pictures of documents they would accept. It took 3 people 20 minutes digging through this book for them to be happy).

If you have family/friends in another state, try to get a license there. Then exchange it your state. Most states make it pretty easy to exchange another license for one of theirs - all they do is check your driving record.

I did this last year, was not asked for any ID other than the old, expired license.

The new law states that anyone getting a liscense with immigration paperwork has special wording added to the DL/state ID. Something to the affect of "No Valid For Transfer". So this probably won't work.

I have also had big problems (I'm British) and I'm in Virginia. I have posted my experiences on here on this forum. I have passed the written and road tests but they only gave me a license valid until June. I can't get a permanent license until my Green card arrives, so I have a very long wait :(
